Programme purpose: The Federation Secretariat in the Americas Zone seeks to provide all relevant support to the 35 Red Cross Societies of the Americas with the aim to increase their capacities, skills and tools; to assist them in reaching a greater number of people living in conditions of high vulnerability and risk; to enhance their work in strengthening community livelihoods and resilience, and to be present where and when needs are greatest and the Red Cross can make a difference.

Appeal history:

- This Emergency Appeal was initially launched on a preliminary basis on 24 October, 2008 for 1,110,911 CHF (USD 1,015,550 or EUR 707,586); for nine months to assist 30,000 beneficiaries.

- CHF 271,000 (USD 247,715 or EUR 172,611) has been allocated from the Federation's Disaster Relief Emergency Fund (DREF) on 20 October 2008 to support the National Societies.

- Louisiana: IRT sent 2 shipments of medicines and supplies worth more $66,400 to aid victims of Hurricane Ike.

- Mississippi: IRT deployed six skilled construction teams, totaling 98 volunteers, as part of its multi-year commitment to help poor and elderly victims of Hurricane Katrina repair

Honduras flood update

Peace Corps workers traveling with Medical Teams International volunteers posted this Honduras flood update last week:

In one town, after we had already finished a full days work, a young man in his twenties came to the home where we were staying, escorted by his elderly father. His hands were a mere mess of blood.

The young man, who is right handed, had been cutting through something, which he held in his right hand, when the knife suddenly broke through the object he'd been cutting and immediately sliced deep into his ring, middle, and index fingers.

The 2008 Hurricane Season officially closed on Sunday, 30 November 2008. Of the sixteen named tropical systems one impacted Belize directly; Topical Storm Arthur. This storm made its mark the day before the official start of the hurricane season. This system produced torrential rains across Belize for over three days, causing flooding over the Orange Walk and Corozal Districts initially and then life threatening floods along the North Stann Creek and Sittee Rivers. ShelterBox helps flood-hit Honduras & Cuba

As the Americas emerge from hurricane season, international disaster relief charity ShelterBox is providing aid for those displaced by a series of hurricanes in Cuba.

A ShelterBox Response Team has been working with the aid agency CARITAS to deliver ShelterBoxes to families who have lost their homes in the Pinar del Rio area of northern Cuba, which suffered hurricane winds of over 200 mph - these are the highest ever on record.

Honduras agradece ayuda de Colombia

Tegucigalpa, diciembre 02 (MRE). La Embajada de la Rep=FAblica de Honduras en Colombia agradeció al Ministerio de Relaciones Exteriores la ayuda recibida para los damnificados que fueron víctimas de las intensas lluvias que azotaron al país centroamericano semanas atrás.

Honduras y los damnificados recibieron doce mil dólares. Tras las inundaciones y deslizamientos, el Gobierno de Tegucigalpa decretó el Estado de Emergencia.
