Hurricane season 2005: 'Annus horribilis'

With 26 tropical storms and 14 hurricanes, the 2005 hurricane season has been rated one of the most active and destructive in history.

Forecasts made at the beginning of the year by experts at the United States National Hurricane Center (NOAA) predicted the formation of at least 12 cyclone systems, five of these reaching categories 3 to 5 in Saffir-Simpson scale. By mid-2005, the forecasts were upwardly revised, predicting the formation of up to 21 hurricanes.

Background

Since the beginning of October, heavy rains from Hurricanes Stan and Beta have pummeled Central America, causing flooding and mudslides that killed hundreds of people and displaced more than a million.

In October, Hurricane Stan dumped rain on Guatemala and El Salvador for days, hampering rescue and relief efforts and impeding access to remote villages. End of 2005 hurricane season does not mean end of relief efforts

(New York: 1 December 2005): More than 30,000 people remain displaced in temporary shelters in Honduras, in the wake of tropical storm Gamma, the 24th named storm of the official 2005 Atlantic hurricane season, and the last to cause significant damage in the Americas.
Thirty-four deaths have been attributed to Gamma, which brought heavy rain to the Caribbean coast of Honduras from 18 to 20 November. Overall, some 90,000 people have been affected by the storm, which caused significant damage in six departments of Honduras already suffering the effects of hurricanes Wilma and Beta.

Help for Honduras after Gamma storm - 1 Dec 2005

CAFOD has pledged support for those communities affected in Honduras, following the devastation caused by Tropical Storm Gamma.
The storm, which has swept across the east coast of Central America, is believed to have left at least 32 people dead, and up to 25,000 evacuated from their homes.

It caused floods and landslides in northern Honduras, which remains on alert, and packed winds of around 45 mph (72km/h). Thousands of homes were left destroyed in its wake.

The centre of the storm was recorded as being approximately 215 miles (345km) east-south-east of Belize City

UN teams assess damage in wake of tropical storm Gamma in Honduras

In the wake of tropical storm Gamma, which left at least 34 people dead and almost 90,000 affected in Honduras, the United Nations system in the country has dispatched five assessment teams to scope out long-term damage from flooding and mudslides.

Gamma struck Honduras on 19 November 2005, right behind deadly hurricanes Stan, Wilma and Beta, all of which caused great havoc around the Caribbean and Central America. Entire villages have been isolated as a result of mudslides.

State's Karen Hughes to lead delegation to Central America

Seeks private sector aid for region's victims of natural disasters
U.S. State Department official Karen Hughes will lead a delegation of U.S. business leaders to Central America December 4-6 to encourage private sector aid for the victims of recent natural disasters in the region.

In a November 30 statement, the State Department said Hughes, under secretary for public diplomacy and public affairs, and the private sector leaders will visit Guatemala, Honduras and El Salvador.

Emergency grant aid to the Republic of Honduras for torrential rain disaster caused by tropical depression "Gamma"

On November 25 (Fri), the Government of Japan decided to extend emergency assistance in kind (blankets, sleeping mats, water tanks, plastic jelly cans and generators) of worth approximately 11,000,000 yen to the Republic of Honduras, which suffered torrential rainfall caused by tropical depression "Gamma."

In the Republic of Honduras, tropical depression "Gamma" caused torrential rains in six departments in the north, which triggered natural disasters such as overflowing rivers, flooding and landslides. They left 32 people dead and 30,223 afflicted as of November 21.

Japón condona a Honduras 434 millones de dólares

The 2005 hurricane season appears intent on maintaining its onslaught on Central America, leaving a trail of disaster and despair. In its wake is a high toll of victims, major infrastructure damage and thousands of homeless.
