Honduran BIC church reaches out to drought-stricken community

LAS POZAS, Honduras - In water-starved southern Honduras, this isolated village is getting neighborly assistance from a nearby Brethren in Christ congregation. With financial and technical support from Mennonite Central Committee (MCC), church members have helped the Las Pozas community organize to build three dams.

Latest information confirms a sharp drop in global cereal production in 2002, to 1 833 million tonnes. As a result of this, and a marginal rise expected in total cereal utilization in 2002/03, world cereal stocks for crop years ending in 2003 are forecast to plunge sharply, by 110 million tonnes from their opening level, to 466 million tonnes.

The number of countries facing severe food emergencies worldwide stands at 39. Serious food shortages have emerged in eastern Africa, and the food situation remains critical in southern Africa.

a) Significant Events:

During the weekend of 23 November, more than 250 persons of the Barrancabermeja municipality were affected by clashes between armed groups. Eighty percent of these people are WFP community kitchens beneficiaries and most of them are displaced women. WFP is monitoring the situation.

b) Security:

UNSECOORD placed the WFP Bogotá office on a high alert following a break-in in a neighboring institution, a take over of an embassy in the area and several threats targeting the WFP office.

Security clearances to staff have been issued to all areas.

WFP delivered 43.4 MT of food assistance to 12 WFP FFW and community kitchen projects in three provinces.
