Guyana: Some regions still affected by heavy rainfall

Georgetown, GINA, December 30, 2008 - As Guyana continues to experience above normal rainfall some areas have reported that they have been affected by the accumulation of water.

Guyana: Several more health teams deployed to Regions Four and Five

Georgetown, GINA, December 29, 2008 - The Ministry of Health has deployed more teams to communities along the East Coast Demerara and in Region Five which are affected by water accumulation as the ministry's monitoring continues.

Minister of Health Dr. Leslie Ramsammy explained today that eight additional teams were sent out to assist in the medical outreach programme for Regions Four and Five.

Guyana: Most Regions report no accumulation of water

Georgetown, GINA, December 29, 2008 - Following the unprecedented rainfall in several areas most of the administrative regions today reported that they experienced no accumulation of water.

Region 1 (Barima/Waini)

Regional Chairman, Fermin Singh said while there is still heavy rainfall there is no accumulation of water at this time.

Region 2 (Pomeroon/Supenaam)

Regional Chairman, Ali Baksh reported that there was some rainfall this morning but no build-up of water. He said that pumps in the region are working well.

Guyana: More health teams deployed

-as Health Ministry continues to monitor situation

Georgetown, GINA, December 27, 2008 - The Ministry of Health has dispatched several additional health teams to provide medical services to areas which are affected by the intense rainfall. The teams were dispatched to communities in Regions Four, Five and Six including Georgetown and East Bank Demerara.

This was today disclosed by Health Minister Dr. Leslie Ramsammy at a press conference he held at his Upper Brickdam, Georgetown office this morning to update the media on the latest decisions of the Ministry.

Guyana: Health teams continue to visit affected areas, medications to be taken to homes

Georgetown, GINA, December 26, 2008 - Health teams dispatched by the Ministry of Health to affected communities along the East Coast Demerara corridor and other areas continue to treat persons for minor ailments, as the Government maintains strict surveillance on these communities.

Minister within the Ministry of Health Dr. Bheri Ramsaran has indicated that teams which were dispatched earlier by the Ministry will remain in the communities as long as there is accumulation on the land.

Guyana: Heavy rainfall affects several regions

Georgetown, GINA, December 26, 2008 - There has been significant rainfall recorded over the last few days in Guyana resulting in some regions experiencing flooding up to nine inches in some areas.

The Government Information Agency (GINA) contacted the regions this afternoon to get an update as to the situation in each region.

Guyana: Permanent health teams established in affected communities

Health Ministry rolls out proactive strategy

Georgetown, GINA, December 24, 2008 - The Ministry of Health has established several permanent health teams within the affected areas on the East Coast Demerara and other areas affected by water accumulation as a result of the intense rainfall. This was today disclosed by Health Minister Dr. Leslie Ramsammy at a media conference he held at his office.

Dr. Ramsammy who was at the time updating the media on the health teams' reports and findings explained that this is the usual health preparation for December - January annually.

Guyana: Weather situation expected to continue - Dr. Luncheon, outlines plans to address the situation

Guyana: Health teams continue to visit affected areas

Georgetown, GINA, December 23, 2008 - The Ministry of Health continues to monitor the health situation of residents in areas along the East Coast Demerara and other areas affected by accumulation caused by intense rainfall.

According to Director of the Regional Health Services of the Ministry of Health Dr. Kumarie Jaipersaud, several teams were dispatched today to areas such as Victoria, Dazzel Housing Scheme, Paradise, Bachelor's Adventure and Enterprise.

Information note: Flooding in Guyana

Bridgetown, Barbados, 4:00 pm Friday December 19, 2008 (CDERA) - Guyana has been experiencing excessive rainfall since the beginning of December 2008. Region 3 (West Demerara/Essequibo Islands) and Region 4 (Demerara/Mahaica) have been inundated by floodwaters. Widespread flooding has been reported in low-lying communities on the East Coast of Demerara with 8 - 14 inches of water settling on the land.

Guyana: Health Ministry effectively responds to areas affected by heavy rainfall

Georgetown, GINA, December 17, 2008 - In light of the accumulation of water on the East Coast of Demerara, Minister within the Ministry of Health Dr. Bheri Ramsaran said that the public can be assured that the Ministry has deployed medical teams in areas which have been affected by the build-up of water.

He made this statement during an interview today at the National Communications Network studio on the Ministry's response to affected areas.
