The Famine Early Warning Systems Network (FEWS NET) monitors trends in staple food prices in countries vulnerable to food insecurity. For each FEWS NET country and region, the Price Bulletin provides a set of charts showing monthly prices in the current marketing year in selected urban centers and allowing users to compare current trends with both five-year average prices, indicative of seasonal trends, and prices in the previous year.

Ukraine: Fears are growing of a new offensive in Mariupol, as non-government troops appear to be gathering nearby. A recent assessment has found that more than 1.6 million people need humanitarian assistance, nearly 1.1 million of whom are in non-government-controlled areas. 20–30% of IDPs are at risk of losing their status and benefits, due to a new mechanism to verify the addresses of IDPs.

Late season dryness spreads across much of Southern Africa

  1. Below-average rainfall since February has resulted in rainfall deficits in southwestern Ethiopia.
    Rainfall forecast during the next week should help alleviate deficits.

  2. Below-average rainfall over bi-modal northern Tanzania during the past several weeks has increased rainfall deficits and affected crop conditions. A significant increase in rainfall is expected across Tanzania and neighboring countries in late March.

Adolescents are a neglected group in terms of nutrition. In some countries up to a half of adolescents are malnourished. Yet optimal nutrition during adolescence – a period of rapid physical growth – is crucial.

Urgent action is needed to address adolescent malnutrition in low- and middle-income countries. And given the high numbers of adolescent girls who give birth and of girls under 18 who get married, it is imperative that – in order to break the intergenerational cycle of malnutrition – nutrition interventions target adolescent girls.

  • Conflict in Iraq has disrupted food markets, leading to price hikes in Anbar, Salah Al-Din and Kirkuk. According to the 2014-2015 Strategic Response Plan, around 5.2 million people are in need of humanitarian assistance, and over 2.5 million people are currently displaced.

Según el INSIVUMEH, en el mes de marzo, se espera una reducción estacional de lluvias en la parte de Boca Costa, Franja trasversal del Norte y Caribe, condiciones normales de lluvia en el Petén, y en el resto del país pueden presentarse lloviznas o lluvias ligeras que no serán significativas para los acumulados de lluvia. Estas condiciones, aunadas a las de febrero, permitirán una producción de granos básicos favorable en el sur de Petén y la Franja Transversal del Norte, cuya cosecha sale entre febrero y marzo.

A large-scale tsunami response exercise will take place in the Caribbean on 25 March. The purpose of this exercise is to test the Tsunami and other Coastal Hazards Warning System for the Caribbean and Adjacent Regions, established in 2005 under the auspices of the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission of UNESCO (IOC-UNESCO). It is designed to evaluate the response capacity of Caribbean countries and adjacent regions* in the event of a dangerous tsunami. The organizers** of the test have prepared two scenarii.

Cameroon: The number of people internally displaced in the north has almost doubled since 10 February, to 117,000. This brings the number of displaced in Cameroon to an estimated 412,700, including 66,000 fleeing Boko Haram violence in Nigeria and the rest from the Central African Republic.
