Syria: The military offensive in Aleppo governorate has displaced more than 40,000 people since late January, and the number of displaced is reported to be increasing. There is concern that a siege of opposition-held areas of Aleppo city is imminent. An estimated 20,000 newly displaced Syrians are stuck at the Bab al Salam crossing along the Syria–Turkey border, as Turkey has denied them entry into Turkish territory.

What is El Niño?

El Niño is the warming of sea surface temperatures in the tropical Pacific. While the main threats to food production are reduced rainfall and drought in some regions, El Niño can also cause heavy rains and flooding in others.

El Instituto Nacional de Sismología, Vulcanología, Meteorología e Hidrología (Insivumeh) informó este lunes que monitorean la actividad de los volcanes Santiaguito, Pacaya y de Fuego, debido al incremento en la cantidad de humo que han lanzado en las últimas horas.

Entre Retalhuleu y Quetzaltenango, luego de las intensas explosiones del volcán Santiaguito, el Insivumeh detalla que el cono mantiene una desgasificación débil y que lanza una columna de humo que alcanza 2 mil 800 metros sobre el nivel del mar.

El volcán Santiaguito, que ha estado activo en las últimas semanas, a media mañana de ayer mostró una fuerte explosión que generó flujos de lava de alta temperatura sobre sus faldas.

La erupción generó grandes columnas de ceniza que alcanzaron los 2,400 metros de altura y que causó alarma entre la población. No obstante, el Instituto Nacional de Sismología, Vulcanología, Meteorología e Hidrología (Insivumeh), descartó que esta actividad del coloso represente serio peligro.

Guatemala, 7 feb (AGN).- El volcán Santiaguito, ubicado en Quetzaltenango, en el occidente de Guatemala, registró de nuevo actividad y lanzamiento de cenizas en las últimas horas, por lo que cuerpos de socorro y autoridades de aviación civil se encuentran en alerta preventiva.

El Instituto Nacional de Sismología, Vulcanología, Meteorología e Hidrología (Insivumeh), calificó como “fuertes” las explosiones originadas a partir de las 10:23 en el cráter del cono caliente.
