Greece - Porto Germeno Disaster Extent - Burnt Areas - August 25, 2009

Several forest fires occurred since August 21, 2009 in the prefectures of Attica and Boeotia, north-western of Athens, Greece. Many residents had to be evacuated from their homes. The map shows the location of active fire hot spots on different days and burnt areas on August 25, 2009. The active fire hot spots were automatically derived from MODIS Fire Information System. The hot spots and the burnt areas are superimposed on a natural color image of Landsat 5 acquired on August 25, 2009. Only cloudless areas were considered for calculating the statistics

Greece - Northern Grammatiko Disaster Extent - Burnt Areas - August 26, 2009

Several forest fires occurred since August 21, 2009 in the prefecture Attica, north-eastern of Athens, Greece. Many residents had to be evacuated from their homes. The map shows detailed damage information for the region around Grammatiko derived from IKONOS satellite data acquired on August 26, 2009.

Several forest fires occurred since August 21, 2009 in the southeastern of the prefecture Euboea, Greece. The map shows the burnt areas derived by the analysis of ALOS AVNIR-2 satellite data acquired on August 25, 2009 and the location of active fire hot spots on different days. Please note that areas below clouds may in some cases not be detected properly. Only cloudless areas were considered for calculating the statistics of the burnt areas. Greece - Attica Forest Fires Overview Map (as of 24 Aug 2009)

Several forest fires have occurred since August 21, 2009 in the prefecture Attica, north-eastern of Athens, Greece. The fires, fanned by strong winds, destroyed thousands of hectares of forest land, farming fields and olive groves. Many residents had to be evacuated from their homes. ZKI/DLR is monitoring continuously the fire situation in Europe with the help of MODIS Fire Information System. Thereby ZKI uses the ground stations of the German Remote Sensing Data Center and processes the data automatically.
