Update no 20: Humanitarian Situation in Libya and the Neighbouring Countries

Population Movements

By 18 April, a total of 550,680 people had crossed from Libya into neighbouring countries. So far, almost 85,000 people were evacuated with the support of the Humanitarian Evacuation Cell (HEC). 30,000 of those were passengers of UNHCR contracted flights. The average cost per UNHCR contracted passenger was USD 604, the average overall cost per UNHCR flight was USD 120,597. In total, UNHCR has spent USD 18,210,268 on air evacuation. IOM assumed full responsibility for the humanitarian evacuation operation on 28 March 2011.

BACKGROUND AND KEY DEVELOPMENTS

- Extremely hot temperatures and below normal rainfall across southeast Europe from June to August 2007 led to numerous wildfires in nearly every country in the region. Although wildfires are annual occurrences, and the local ecosystems are fire-adapted, the 2007 season was among the worst on record, according to national firefighting authorities and government officials.

The immediate donor cash and in-kind support allowed relief assistance to be delivered quickly. The emergency relief phase is now coming to an end, and while no further relief items are needed, cash support is still required to cover the cost of relief items which have been purchased by the Federation to replenish emergency stocks used in the relief operation.

General Situation

1. On 15 September 1999, the General Secretariat for Civil Protection of the Greek Ministry of Interior released updated figures about the impact of the earthquake which hit the northern suburbs of Athens on 7 September 1999. The report states that 136 persons were killed and 4 people are still missing. Currently only 6 people are hospitalized due to injuries.

2. The General Secretariat for Civil Protection also reported that over 70,000 people are homeless, and the total number of affected population is over 100,000.

Situation

1. On 10 September 1999 OCHA received an information message from the General Secretariat for Civil Protection of the Greek Ministry of Interior. The report states that since the earthquake, which hit Greece on Tuesday, 7 September, 755 aftershocks have been felt across Athens, including 17 aftershocks that registered a magnitude between 4.0 and 4.8 on the Richter Scale. According to the media, the death toll has reached 106 today.

Séisme en Grèce: l'équipe suisse est de retour

Situation: 10.9.99, 18h30

L'équipe de la Chaîne suisse de sauvetage est de retour de sa mission en Grèce. Sept des huit membres de l'équipe ainsi que les trois chiens sont arrivés vendredi à 18h20 à bord d'un avion de ligne Swissair qui assurait la liaison entre Athènes et Zurich. La huitième personne, un citoyen double national, est resté chez lui, en Grèce.

Les chiens suisses ont localisé au total 14 personnes. Grâce à ce travail de localisation, trois personnes ont pu être sauvées. Neuf autres victimes ont été retirées sans vie des décombres.

Les trois chiens de catastrophe de la Chaîne suisse de sauvetage sont parvenus jusqu'ici à localiser 14 personnes ensevelies dans la zone du tremblement de terre, au Nord d'Athènes. Grâce à ce travail de localisation, les équipes de sauveteurs de Grèce et de pays tiers ont pu sauver trois personnes. Sept autres victimes ont été retirées sans vie des décombres, mais les travaux se poursuivent pour sortir quatre personnes encore prises sous les gravats.

The Disaster
A strong earthquake struck the Greek capital Athens at 14.56 hours local time today (Tuesday), measuring 5.9 on the Richter scale and lasting ten seconds. The tremour was felt as far away as Corinth, 100 km south of the city. According to latest figures from media reports, at least 25 people are dead and hundreds are trapped in rubble. State television said that children, the youngest of them aged five, had been at a nursery school in one of the collapsed buildings. 1. SEARCH AND RESCUE OPERATIONS IN EGION COMPLETED.

2. FINAL DEATH TOLL REPORTED: 26. MORE THAN 60 PERSONS REPORTED INJURED, AND HOUSING FOR MORE THAN 15,000 PEOPLE HAS BEEN AFFECTED.

3. THE GOVERNMENT OF JAPAN HAS RELEASED RELIEF GOODS FROM THE DHA WAREHOUSE IN PISA, ITALY, INCLUDING 50 FAMILY TENTS AND 1000 BLAN KETS. DHA IS ARRANGING TRANSPORTATION OF THE GOODS TO GREECE, THIS WILL BE COMPLETED ON 22 JUNE.

4. GREECE ALSO ACCEPTED AN ITALIAN OFFER OF 20 SHELTERED HOUSING FACILITIES TO BE DEPLOYED TO THE DAMAGED AREA.

1. UNDRO/UNDP RESIDENT REPRESENTATIVE REPORTS EARTHQUAKE MEASURING 6.2 RICHTER SCALE OCCURRED AT 20.23 HRS ON 13 SEPTEMBER (EPICENTRE AT 250 KM SOUTHWEST OF ATHENS IN THE SEA, BAY OF MESSINIA).

2. REPORTS INDICATE 17 PEOPLE KILLED, 300 INJURED AND 12 MISSING IN KALAMATA, 240 KM SOUTHWEST OF ATHENS. 70 PERCENT OF BUILDINGS DAMAGED IN THIS TOWN OF 45,000 INHABITANTS, INCLUDING 1,150 CRACKED AND 112 COLLAPSED.
