UK to protect up to 360 million children against polio

British aid will help to vaccinate up to 360 million children against polio over the next 6 years, International Development Secretary Justine Greening announced today, ahead of the Global Vaccine Summit in Abu Dhabi.

Polio is a debilitating and life threatening disease that has been successfully eradicated across the globe, saving millions of lives. It now remains prevalent in just 3 countries: Afghanistan, Pakistan and Nigeria. UK support will help provide routine immunisations against polio to some of the most vulnerable and hard to reach groups of people.

Royal Engineers in Sierra Leone water project

British Army engineers are involved in a pioneering drilling project to bring clean water to thousands of people in Sierra Leone.

As a result of this project, fresh water will be delivered to more than 6,500 people where it is scarce and the threat of illnesses like cholera is high as people are forced to use water in contaminated rivers and puddles for drinking and cleaning.

UK helps contain yellow fever outbreak in Darfur

Britain will support the vaccination of 2 million people in Darfur, Sudan to help contain the world's worst yellow fever outbreak in 20 years.

Development Secretary Justine Greening announced the new UK aid today after more than 800 suspected cases of yellow fever have been reported.

A total of 168 people have died from the disease across Darfur in the west of Sudan in the two months since the outbreak began.

UK support for countries worst hit by Hurricane Sandy

Humanitarian support for Haiti and Cuba to help save lives and reduce suffering in the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy was announced today by Justine Greening, Secretary of State for International Development.

The support for the two countries, which have been worst affected by the hurricane in the Caribbean, comes following a new appeal from the United Nations. The UK will provide immediate help for two million people in Haiti and emergency shelter and relief to 20,000 people in Cuba.

Swine flu vaccine ready for tests after pandemic declared

GENEVA, June 12, 2009 (AFP) - A Swiss pharmaceutical giant said Friday it had a swine flu vaccine ready for trial as governments stepped up precautions following the World Health Organization's declaration of a pandemic.

While millions could catch the flu, governments and health experts around the world have sought to play down fears that influenza A(H1N1) could become a major killer.

Swine flu has so far infected almost 30,000 people in 74 countries and claimed 146 lives since it was first detected in Mexico in April, according to WHO figures.

Human infection with new influenza A (H1N1) virus: clinical observations from a school-associated outbreak in Kobe, Japan, May 2009

As of 11 June 2009, 74 countries had reported to WHO a total of 28 774 laboratory- confirmed cases of new influenza A (H1N1) virus infection, including 144 deaths. 42 further patients under investigation in England have today been confirmed with swine flu.
