Harnessing modern technology and increasing regional cooperation in disaster preparedness could save lives and help prevent some of the billions of dollars in property damage each year across Asian and the Pacific, United Nations officials stressed today at a meeting in Bangkok.

Tzu Chi Foundation travels to Micronesia to provide medical assistance

Between August 21st and 25th, representatives of Taiwan Buddhist Tzu Chi Foundation went to the Micronesia state of Chuuk and donated 900 kilograms of medical equipments and supplies to the state hospital there and held several free clinics on neighboring islands.
In July 2002, Typhoon Chata'an hit Micronesia, which took 47 lives and left thousands homeless. Upon hearing this news, Tzu Chi Foundation promptly put together 850 Tzu Chi Family Medicinal Boxes. Tzu Chi Hawaii Branch donated antibiotics and sutures. Several pharmaceutical companies in Taiwan also donated drugs and medications.

Micronesia: Chuuk needs six months to recover from typhoon

30 AUGUST 2002 CHUUK (Pacnews) ---- FSM President Leo Falcam says it will take Chuuk State at least another six months to recover from the damage wrought by Typhoon Chata'an in July, according to the Pacific Daily News newspaper.

The typhoon struck Chuuk on 2 July, causing more than 30 landslides that killed 47 people and destroyed hundreds of homes and vital food crops.

The newspaper reported that around one thousand people have been displaced out of a population of 47,000.

A shipment of supplies collected by the Salvation Army left Guam bound for Chuuk yesterday.

HAG=C5TÑA, Guam (Pacific Daily News): August 29, 2002 - Clothes, diapers, food, utensils and toys are among the many items collected by the Salvation Army that are scheduled to leave for Chuuk State today. Many of the items were donated by families from Andersen Air Force Base in Yigo, said Donna Kloppenburg, public relations and development director for the Salvation Army.

HAGÅTÑA, Guam (July 19, 2002 - Pacific Daily News) - Guam Memorial Hospital has no empty beds, so six people seriously injured during landslides in Chuuk, Federated States of Micronesia, will be sent to Hawai'i instead.

Help slowly arriving at devastated Micronesian atoll

CHUUK, Federated States of Micronesia, July 12 (AFP) - Rescue workers are having to dig by hand in a Micronesian atoll where dozens were killed and many remain trapped in the wake of devastation caused by Typhoon Chata'an, authorities said Friday.

Chataan Special Task Force administrator Bernard Billimont told AFP a confirmed 49 people are dead following the storm, but it was difficult to know how many more were missing.

"We cannot give specific numbers or statistics because we are still in the process of compiling assessment reports," he said.
