Typhoon Bopha (26W) - Update 5

This is an extremely dangerous system with very destructive winds. Authorities and disaster managers are on high alert and over 45 typhoon evacuation centers have opened. Once Typhoon Bopha has passed over Palau, forecasts show that it will track towards the Philippines where emergency preparedness measures are being put in place.

Tropical Storm Bopha (26W) Update 4

What are the current conditions?

Authorities and disaster managers are on high alert with current predictions that Tropical Storm Bopha (TS Bopha) will pass close to Palau as a Category 4 tropical cyclone with the potential for a significant impact.

As of this morning, TS Bopha remains a Category 2 tropical cyclone with maximum winds averaging 93 km near the centre.

This morning’s satellite imagery shows that the system is becoming better organized and is continuing to intensify.

Tropical Storm Bopha (26W) Update 3

What are the current conditions?

Over the past 24 hours Tropical Storm Bopha (26W) has continued to intensify and is now a Category 2 tropical cyclone with maximum winds averaging 55 knots near the centre.

The system continues to move steadily westwards and modeling is in agreement with this meaning that there is a high degree of confidence in the predicted forecast track.

Tropical Storm Bopha (26W) Update 1

What are the current conditions?

Tropical Storm Bopha (26W) has developed southwest of Pohnpei and southeast of Chuuk in the Federated States of Micronesia.

It is currently a weak Category 1 (BoM System) tropical cyclone with winds of 35 knots near the centre. It is moving westnorthwest at about 2 mph and is expected to steadily intensify overnight and turn more to the west. Over the weekend, the system may develop into a Category 4 tropical cyclone.

HIGHLIGHTS

  • Weak El Niño conditions expected to form in the Pacific Island region during the September to November period.

  • Dryer conditions expected in Fiji, Samoa and Wallis & Futuna. Above normal rainfall is forecast for the Federated States of Micronesia. Normal rainfall is forecast elsewhere, with no clear guidance given for Niue, the Solomon Islands, the Southern Cook Islands and the Society Islands.

Abnormally high sea levels have been experienced by a range of Pacific Island Countries (PICs) since Tuesday 9 December. In some instances, damage to buildings, flooding, and displacement of people has occurred. No deaths have been reported.

Highlights

- 17 families left homeless in Kiribati and an undisclosed number of people displaced

- Early reports from FSM suggest some outer islands may have suffered from inundation

- International assistance has not been requested by any country

Situation overview

Around Tuesday 9 December, two regions of abnormally high sea levels, one over the Solomon Sea South of the New Britain Coast in PNG, and one over Guam waters north of the equator, appear to have been forced together by two tropical depressions.

Situation

1. On Friday 9 April, Typhoon Sudal passed Yap State of Federated States of Micronesia (FSM), causing extensive damage to public and private utilities and food crops in the mainland of Yap, whose population is 8,000. The outlying islands of Ulithi and Fais were also struck by the typhoon.

Situation

1. On Friday 9 April, Typhoon Sudal passed Yap State of Federated States of Micronesia (FSM) with winds of more than 200 km/hour and waves of more than 10-meters high. The typhoon battered the State, whose population is 12,000, for more than five hours, causing extensive damage to public and private utilities and food crops.
