Appeal launched on 22 January 2003 for CHF 820,000 for 3 months for 30,000 beneficiaries. The relief operation was extended in order to complete rehabilitation activities including repairs of community water supplies and school infrastructure. Most activities have now been completed. Fiji: Relief efforts in north into second phase: Tuisese

Relief work in the North has moved into its second phase and all those who have been affected by Cyclone Ami are being catered for.

Minister for Regional Development Ilaitia Tuisese said this today in Parliament while answering question from Labour Party member Krishna Dutt.

Fiji: Kiwi families still helping cyclone victims

Five New Zealand containers of canned food, clothing, bedding, stationery, kitchen materials and water tanks have already arrived in Fiji to help victims of January's Cyclone Ami and more are on their way, Aid Minister Marian Hobbs said today.

Marian Hobbs and Foreign Affairs Minister Phil Goff are in Fiji and have visited Labasa, an area hit hard by the cyclone. The ministers are leading a delegation of New Zealand MPs, business people, academics and non-government organisations to Papua New Guinea and Fiji.

NZ pledges more money to cyclone hit Fiji

New Zealand will provide a further $400,000 to assist rehabilitation work in cyclone-hit Fiji, Foreign Minister Phil Goff and Aid Minister Marian Hobbs announced today while visiting Labasa, an area struck by January's Cyclone Ami.

Fiji: Italy gives $400,000 for cyclone Ami rehab

The Government of Italy through the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (UNOCHA) today handed over at least $400,000, to the Ministry of Regional Development, for Cyclone Ami relief and rehabilitation work in the Northern Division.

UNOCHA's Regional Disaster Response Adviser for the Pacific, Charlie Higgins says the sum would be divided between ongoing food supplies for at least 650 badly affected families and the provision of water supply materials to support longer-term recovery.

Fiji: Army engineers build temporary classrooms in north

Students and teachers of Boubale Indian School in Labasa are holding their classes in the recently completed temporary classrooms built by the engineers of the Fiji Military Forces (FMF).
With life picking up slowly after Cyclone Ami ravaged the Northern Division, 174 pupils of this primary school are the first to be assisted through government's rehabilitation programme which started late last month.

Divisional Planning Officer (DPO) Northern, Semi Matalau said the army engineers are also building similar temporary structures for Korotari Arya School which caters for 155 students.

EC grants €420,000 in humanitarian aid to the victims of Cyclone Ami in the Fiji Islands

The European Commission has granted €420,000 in humanitarian aid for the people of Fiji Islands affected by Cyclone Ami in January. The funds will be directed through the Commission's Humanitarian Aid Office (ECHO), which comes under the responsibility of Commissioner Poul Nielson. The objective of this funding decision is to help people whose homes have been destroyed or damaged by providing them with essential non-food items. Fiji: Shiu Raj applauds relief workers

The Minister for Multi-ethnic Affairs applauded the efforts of relief workers in cyclone ravaged areas of the north. He said their work was much appreciated despite the negative comments made by members of the Fiji Labour Party (FLP).
He said in parliament today, the Prime Minister and the Government had made exhaustive efforts to alleviate problems faced by those undergoing hardships, and went on to outline his Ministries rehabilitation work.

Fiji: Northern schools receive assistance

The primary schools affected by Cyclone Ami will receive an increase in tuition fee assistance, says Minister for Education, Ro Teimumu Kepa.
In a press release from the Ministry of Education today, the first payment of such funds into school accounts has been completed.

She said secondary school students will receive full tuition for the year. Forms have been sent out to schools for verification of information. Upon receipt of these, the Ministry will then proceed with other necessary action.

Fiji: Agriculture funds relief efforts

The Ministry of Agriculture Sugar, and Land Resettlement has re-allocated $1267,200 dollars from within its 2003 budget provision to help with alleviation efforts.

Assistant Minister for Agriculture, Sugar and Land Resettlement Isireli Tuvuki announced this in Parliament yesterday.

"The Ministry will continue to do its best within the limited resources it has to facilitate the work to those in need so they would quickly recover and get on with their normal lives and activities which they enjoyed prior to the devastation caused by tropical Cyclone Ami," he said.

Fiji: Regional Ministry to embark on community capacity building

The Ministry of Regional Development will soon embark on a community capacity building and partnership programme as preparatory measures against future disasters, said Minister for Regional Development, Ilaitia Tuisese.

Speaking in Parliament yesterday (February 17), Mr Tuisese said the programme is a result of the lack of public awareness and poor response to warnings that was a contributing factor to the current death toll and missing people after Cyclone Ami.

Fiji: Multi-ethnic continues rebuilding process in the North

The Minister for Multi-Ethnic Affairs, George Shiu Raj, last week handed over funds for the rehabilitation of some schools and a number of his Ministry's projects in the Northern Division.

Fiji: Cabinet to hear disaster management improvement needs

The National Disaster Management Office (NDMO) will submit to Cabinet a paper detailing its operations after Cyclone Ami in view of improving its performance in disaster response and coordination.

After a debriefing session in Suva today, NDMOD Director, Joeli Rokovada, said that the submission will be based on today's deliberations. The debriefing session was attended by representatives from various government ministries and departments, statutory authorities involved with the NDMO and non-government organisations namely the Fiji Red Cross and the Fiji Council of Social Services.

Fiji: DISMAC ceases operation today

All Disaster Management Center (DISMAC) personnel will attend a de-briefing session today at the National Disaster Management Office (NDMO) based at the Ministry of Regional Development headquarters in Suva.

Fiji: Relief work almost completed - Tuisese

Most of the work needed in the Cyclone Ami relief operations have been undertaken, says Minister for Regional Development, Ilaitia Tuisese.
His response came in the wake of allegations made by Labour Party leader, Mahendra Chaudhry, in the media that government must move faster to deliver assistance effectively to cyclone victims.
