The following information was provided by the Fiji National Disaster Management Centre (DISMAC) through the OCHA Regional Disaster Response Advisor for the Pacific.

Situation and Damage

1. A tropical depression traversed across the Fiji Islands from the Northeast to the Southwest from 6 to 12 December, causing gusty winds, thunderstorms and bands of continuous heavy rain across the main island of Viti Levu. The downpours and run-off caused rivers

Fiji: Survey of damage underway

Surveys on the extent of damage caused by flash floods is slowly underway in the Western Division.

However, officials said today that despite improvements to the weather, complete surveys can only be done when all the roads are accessible. For this, the Public Works Department is working almost on a 24-hour rotation repairing damaged roads.

Assistant District Officer Ra, Ilisoni Wainiqolo said all roads in the district are open expect for the Waimare Road which remains inaccessible because of a broken bridge.

Fiji: Flooding in the West brings towns to halt

December 8th, 2000ate

Heavy flooding in Ba and Tavua yesterday (07/12/00) brought almost all activities to a standstill.

Numerous roads and bridges were closed to traffic and villagers sought sanctuary in various evacuation centers.

Acting Divisional Officer for Tavua, Ram Chandra, said that about 60 men, women and children from Nabuna Village had fled to the Tavua District School.

"A major portion of the village is under water and people don't want to take risks which could spell disaster," Mr Chandra said.
