Climate Update Pacific Issue 02, January, 2013

In this Climate Update, highlights include:

· Between 9 and 11 named Tropical Cyclones were forecast for the 2012 / 2013 South Pacific tropical cyclone season. 3 named Tropical Cyclones have occurred in the South Pacific so far.

· 11 Tropical Depressions have formed in the South Pacific since the beginning of the Tropical Cyclone Season.

· In the South Pacific, one Tropical Depression increased in intensity to Category 3 (Tropical Cyclone Garry) and two to Category 4 (Tropical Cyclone Evan and Freda).

Asia Pacific Humanitarian Bulletin Jan - Dec 2012

NATURAL DISASTERS IN 2012

After an intense year of natural disasters in 2011, countries in the Asia-Pacific region welcomed a reduction in the number of events in 2012. OCHA and the Centre for Research on the Epidemiology of Disasters recorded 93 natural disaster events in 2012, in which over 3,200 people were killed and more than 75 million people were affected. China and the Philippines experienced the most disasters in 2012.

Highlights

• Evacuation Centers in Fiji are currently hosting 13,976 people.

• Initial assessments by Fiji Red Cross Society indicate that as many as 600 house have been severely damaged in Lautoka alone.

Highlights

  • Tropical Cyclone Evan was stationary over Samoa for approximately 24 hours.

  • The Ministry of Police has confirmed that there have been two casualties.

  • The whole of Samoa is without electricity, which may not be restored for up to two weeks.

  • The whole of Samoa is without water, except for critical services such as the hospital.

  • Tropical Cyclone Evan is predicted to pass close to Niuafo’ou in northern Tonga as a Category 3 tropical cyclone on Sunday.

Tropical Cyclone Evan Update 3, 13 December 2012

What are the current conditions?

The centre of Tropical Cyclone Evan is currently just south of Upolu and its movement has slowed somewhat from last night. The system continued to intensify overnight and is now a Category 2 tropical cyclone with winds of 130km per hour and gusts to 170km per hour near the centre.

Now that Tropical Cyclone Evan has crossed over Upolu Island it is expected to become stationary.

Tropical Depression 04F Update - Update 1, 12 December 2012

What are the current conditions?

The satellite image this morning shows Tropical Depression 04F (TD04F) located approximately 350km west of Apia, Samoa.

The system is continuing to intensify as it moves east at approximately 18km per hour. The maximum winds near the centre of the system are currently 56km per hour.

Further intensification is predicted and it is likely that the system will become a significant tropical cyclone within the next 12 to 24 hours.

At 2 PM Fiji Time TD04F was named Tropical Cyclone Evan.

The satellite image this morning showed Tropical Cyclone Evan located approximately 350km west of Apia, Samoa. The system is continuing to intensify as it moves east at approximately 18km per hour. The maximum winds near the centre of the system are currently 56km per hour.

HIGHLIGHTS

  • Weak El Niño conditions expected to form in the Pacific Island region during the September to November period.

  • Dryer conditions expected in Fiji, Samoa and Wallis & Futuna. Above normal rainfall is forecast for the Federated States of Micronesia. Normal rainfall is forecast elsewhere, with no clear guidance given for Niue, the Solomon Islands, the Southern Cook Islands and the Society Islands.
