Ethiopia - As part of its efforts to support the refugees and host communities in the Gambella Region of Ethiopia, IOM organized a training this week (15/03) for South Sudanese refugees on the impacts of deforestation and the need to replenish vegetation.

As part of the Government of Japan-supported Shelter and Livelihood project for the region, the training was provided to 150 households.

The Disasters Emergency Committee (DEC) appeal for the crisis in East Africa has raised **£17.6 million** since it launched on Wednesday, with donations continuing to flood in from the UK public.

Drought and conflict have left 16 million people on the brink of starvation and in urgent need of food, water and medical treatment.

People are already dying in South Sudan and Somalia. In Kenya, the government has declared a national emergency and Ethiopia is battling a new wave of drought following the strongest El Niño on record.

The Horn of Africa is facing one of the worst droughts in decades, leaving almost 12 million people in Ethiopia and Somalia in urgent need of food assistance. Extensive crop failures, record low vegetation coupled with livestock death and limited water resources are affecting Somalia and South and Eastern Ethiopia. CERF has released a total of $36.5 million to help 2.8 million people - more than 20% of the affected population - in Somalia and Ethiopia.
