In some places, two thirds of the seasonal rain ("Deyr") fell in less than 24 hours and, during the last weeks of October, rainfalls of between five and 25 times more than average were recorded. Flash-floods have killed people and livestock, inundated

RECORD rainfalls and floods hitting the Sudan, Ethiopia, Somalia and Kenya are leaving behind a trail of tears and destruction.

The latest to be hit is Ethiopia, where 57 people have been killed and 4,000 made homeless, the state-run
Radio Ethiopia reported on Monday.

''Over 9,000 head of livestock in the Ogaden region, on the border with Somalia, have also been washed away
by flooding, caused by rising rivers,'' Radio Ethiopia said.

Similar flooding has washed away homes and roads and displacing thousands of farmers along the Juba River

NAIROBI, Sept 24 (Reuter) - Gunmen killed two U.N. World Food Programme (WFP) staff in central Ethiopia's Ogaden region in what appeared to be an attempted robbery, WFP said on Wednesday.

The bodies of the two Ethiopians were found on Tuesday by security teams from Birkot town, who had been alerted by a third WFP employee who escaped the attackers.

The belg (secondary) season has come to an end in Ethiopia. Although it accounts for only 5 to 10 percent of national
production, the belg harvest provides the bulk of locally produced cereals in some areas of the northern highlands (North
Shewa, Oromiya, North Wello, and South Wello Zones of Amhara Region and South Tigray Zone of Tigray Region). The
1997 belg rains were irregular and weak, hampering normal agricultural activities and decreasing crop production. In the

Field reports indicate very poor prospects for Ethiopia's 1997 belg (secondary season) harvest, mainly because the season started late and the rains were light and poorly distributed. As a result, the area cultivated for belg crops is less than it was during the two previous belg seasons. FEWS estimates that this season's production in the northern highlands, an important belg production area, probably will be about 30 percent lower than belg production in 1995, and more than 40 percent lower than in 1996.
