Urban Refugees in Cairo

Executive Summary

Cairo, Egypt is home to one of the largest populations of urban refugees in the world. In recent decades, waves of refugees from Sudan, Iraq, Ethiopia, Eritrea, Palestine and elsewhere have fled to Cairo hoping to find third country resettlement, eventually return to their countries of origin, or start a new life by integrating into Egyptian society. For all of these refugees, the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) is the primary institution responsible for determining refugees’ status, offering protection, and facilitating durable solutions.

Djibouti

Total 2012 figures of migrants between Djibouti and Yemen: In 2012, a total of 107,532 persons arrived on the shores of Yemen. The number of migrants arriving in Yemen in 2012; were a 4 per cent increase from the 103,532 persons who arrived in Yemen in 2011, and more than double the 53,382 migrants who arrived in Yemen in 2010. 75 per cent or 80,465 persons who arrived in Yemen in 2012 travelled via Djibouti.

Ethiopia Refugee Update - November-December 2012

As of 31 of December 2012, Ethiopia hosted a total of 376,410 refugees: 223,243 (59.31%) Somalis, 86,177 (22.89%) Sudanese, 62,996 (16.74%) Eritreans and 3,994 (1.06%) from other nationalities. The cumulative figure includes an estimated 20,000 unregistered refugees from South Sudan who are staying with the host communities along the border in Wanthawo Woreda in Western Ethiopia. In November 4,580 new refugees were registered in Ethiopia, while in December the number of new arrivals doubled and reached 10,417.

Administration of Southern Red Sea region implements various development programs in 2012

Assab, 1 January 2013 – The Administration of the Southern Red Sea region indicated that it has implemented various development programs in 2012. The regional Administrator, Mr. Ali Mahmoud, disclosed that 7 villages whose inhabitants were leading nomadic lifestyle have fully resorted to community-based living, besides the putting in place of 6 potable water supply facilities.

Massawa, 1 January 2013 – The Administration of the Northern Red Sea region indicated that significant development accomplishments have been registered in the year 2012 in collaboration with the inhabitants. It made the statement at an assessment meeting conducted over the weekend in the port city of Massawa, during which it was stated that some of the projects put under implementation are pertinent to potable water supply, educational facility and soil and water conservation.

Heavy rainfall in Massawa and its environs cause human and property loss

Massawa, 27 December 2012 – Heavy rainfall in the port city of Massawa and its environs, namely Emberemi, Hirgigo and Dogoli has caused big human and property loss at dawn yesterday.

Reports indicated that 8 people and 20 livestock died from the calamity in Emberemi area, while one national went missing after falling into a river gush. Besides, the disaster completely destroyed 30 houses in Hitumlo and Amatere areas of the port city, as an overflow of Segedeli River washed away 7 livestock and 3 houses in Hirgigo area.

This Revised Emergency Appeal shows a reduced budget from CHF 25,408,085 to CHF 12,258,425; in cash, kind, or services to support the Ethiopian Red Cross Society (ERCS) in assisting approximately 270,000 beneficiaries. The operational timeframe has been extended for 12 months; therefore the end of the operation will be on 31 August 2013. A final report will be made available by 30 November 2013 (three months after the end of the operation).

Potable water supply facilities put in place in 26 villages: Ministry

Asmara, 26 December 2012 – The Ministry of Land, Water and Environment indicated that potable water supply facilities have been put in place in 26 villages in the year 2012 in collaboration with stakeholders and popular participation, while implementation of 16 others is underway. It further pointed out that the potable water supply facilities comprise reservoirs, distribution stations and pipelines, and that 20 of them utilize solar energy, while the rest 6 are electricity generator-powered.

IFAD grant of US$17.28 million to boost national food security in Eritrea

Rome, 14 December 2012 – The International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) will provide a US$17.28 million grant to the State of Eritrea to help improve livelihoods of smallholder farmers with a particular focus on women in the country.

The financing agreement for the National Agriculture Project was signed today by Yohannes Tensue, Alternate Permanent Representative of the State of Eritrea to IFAD, and Kevin Cleaver, Associate Vice President, IFAD.

Somalia is the country generating the third highest number of refugees in the world, after Afghanistan and Iraq.

Somali people are facing one of the worst humanitarian crises in the world today. One in three Somalis is in urgent need of humanitarian assistance and one in every three children living in the South-Central region is malnourished.

UNHCR leads protection and emergency relief interventions targeting 700,000 IDPs out of a total IDP population estimated at 1.1 and 1.36 million and over 2,100 refugees in Somalia.
