Ethiopian opposition wants referendum on disputed border

ADDIS ABABA, Dec 31 (AFP) - Five Ethiopian opposition parties have called for a referendum on a ruling expected next month by the International Court of Justice (ICJ) over the demarcation of the country's disputed border with Eritrea.

In a letter addressed to UN Secretary General Kofi Annan on December 20, the parties demanded "that the full outcome of the arbitration commission be placed before the Ethiopian people for scrutiny and final decision in the form of referendum and in a context open to strict international supervision."

Eritrea-Ethiopia: Tension rising ahead of border decision

Report
IRIN
NAIROBI, 19 December (IRIN) - Tension is rising "considerably" between Ethiopia and Eritrea, according to UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan who urged both sides to exercise restraint and avoid provocative actions.
In his latest progress report to the Security Council, he noted that each side was accusing the other of military build-up in the demilitarised Temporary Security Zone (TSZ), set up last year after a two-year border war between the two countries. Annan rejected accusations by both sides that the UN peacekeeping mission for Eritrea

Eritrea-Ethiopia: Ethiopia accused of trying to scupper border hearings

Report
IRIN
NAIROBI, 17 December (IRIN) - Eritrea on Monday rejected accusations by Ethiopia that it is mobilising troops in the buffer zone between the two countries, and that it is providing support to the Somali radical Islamic group Al-Ittihad.
The claims were made by Ethiopian Foreign Minister Seyoum Mesfin at a press conference in Addis Ababa on Friday. According to Ethiopian radio, he said Eritrea was violating the Algiers peace agreement by deploying its regular army "in the name of police and militia" in the Temporary Security Zone (TSZ). FAO/GIEWS Food Outlook No. 5, 2001

Rome, December 2001
Highlights

Latest information indicates a slightly larger global cereal output in 2001, of 1 870 million tonnes (including rice in milled terms). However, even at this level, production would still be less than the anticipated utilization requirements in 2001/02, leading to a significant draw-down of cereal stocks.

While Afghanistan currently faces a grave food supply situation, food emergencies persist in many other countries (see box on page 6).

World cereal trade in 2001/02 is forecast at 233 million tonnes, unchanged from the previous season's
