INTRODUCTION

As of January 1998, there were 7.2 million people of concern to UNHCR in Africa, out of an estimated 22.3 million worldwide. The Africa figure includes 3.5 million refugees, 1.5 million internally displaced and 2.2 million former refugees who have recently returned home. In January 1997, the global number of people of concern to UNHCR was 22.7 million, of whom 8 million were in Africa.

Among the 10 major refugee countries of origin in the world, six are African. They are Angola, Burundi, Eritrea, Sierra Leone, Somalia and Sudan.

Une trentaine de personnes ont été tuées et 20 autres blessées hier (lundi) lorsqu'une camp de personnes déplacées a été attaqué dans le sud-ouest du Burundi. BURUNDI: 30 killed in attack on displaced camp

Thirty people were killed and 20 others wounded yesterday (Monday) when a camp for displaced people came under attack in southwest Burundi.

According to Burundi radio, the Muyange camp in Burambi commune had been sheltering some 100 people who recently "abandoned the rebellion".

Ethiopia sees no quick end to fight with Eritrea

KHARTOUM, Dec 14 (Reuters) - An Ethiopian minister said on Monday he could see no early settlement of his country's border dispute with Eritrea, due to be discussed at an African summit conference this week.

"I am not optimistic because Eritrea believes force is the panacea for everything and I don't think it will accept the peace proposals of the OAU," Ethiopian Deputy Foreign Minister Tekeda Alemu told a news conference in Khartoum.

US envoy visits Ethiopia as part of Horn peace effort

ADDIS ABEBA, Dec 8 (AFP) - US envoy Anthony Lake briefly visited the Ethiopian capital on Tuesday, his third trip aimed at resolving the country's border conflict with Eritrea, diplomatic sources said.

Lake, a former national security advisor, met Ethiopian Prime Minister Meles Zenawi, the sources said, adding the envoy travelled from the Eritrean capital, Asmara, where he had been with his delegation since Sunday.

US envoy Lake in Eritrea for peace talks

ADDIS ABABA, Dec 7 (AFP) - US former national security adviser Anthony Lake was Monday in Eritrea's capital Asmara to meet authorities to discuss their border conflict with Ethiopia, US diplomatic sources said here.

Lake In Asmara on Ethio-Eritrean Border Mediation

ADDIS ABABA, Ethiopia (PANA) - United States presidential envoy Anthony Lake left here Sunday for Asmara to continue his third attempt within two months to broker peace in the seven-month old border dispute between Ethiopia and Eritrea.
The envoy left Addis Ababa after a two-day visit during which he held talks with prime minister Meles Zenawi. There was no official statement on the outcome of the consultation.

US envoy back to mediate Ethiopia-Eritrea war

ADDIS ABABA, Dec 4 (Reuters) - U.S. envoy Anthony Lake arrived in the Ethiopian capital Addis Ababa on Friday to continue his attempts to resolve a seven-month border dispute Ethiopia and Eritrea.

This visit is the third to the Horn of Africa by the former National Security Adviser in recent months.

Lake will hold talks with Prime Minister Meles Zenawi and Foreign Minister Seyoum Mesfin before leaving for the Eritrean capital Asmara on Sunday to meet top government officials there.

Eritrea has expelled 39,075 Ethiopians: Addis Ababa

ADDIS ABABA, Dec 2 (AFP) - A total of 39,075 Ethiopians have been expelled from Eritrea amid the ongoing border dispute between the two Horn of Africa countries, the Addis Ababa government said Wednesday.

The government spokesman's office said in a communique received by AFP that 600 Ethiopians were expected Friday in Humera, in northwestern Ethiopia near the disputed border, and another 2,000 would return to Ethiopia between Saturday and Monday via Burie, in the northeast. Some 700 Ethiopians arrived Tuesday in Rama, 235 kilometers
