Providing relief supplies and psychosocial support in earthquake damaged communities

An AmeriCares emergency team is at work in Ecuador, helping families and communities begin the recovery from the strongest earthquake to hit the country since 1979.

AmeriCares is working with local health care partners and medical outreach teams in the region to deliver medicine and relief supplies for survivors. Three tons of medicine and medical supplies from AmeriCares have arrived in Ecuador to resupply hospitals and clinics damaged by the earthquake.

On 16 April 2016, a devastating 7.8 magnitude earthquake hit the coast of Ecuador, killing more than 600 people and leaving tens of thousands in need of assistance.

Ten Partner organizations have dispatched prepositioned relief items and equipment from Panama, including prefabs, latrines, kitchen, shelter and hygiene kits, tarpaulins, water tanks, and dewatering pumps.

Two charter flights have been generously provided by UPS, and one ocean shipment was kindly provided by YachtAid Global.

Johana, 18, from Portoviejo in Manabí is working as a volunteer to protect children as part of Plan International’s response to the Ecuador earthquake. Her village was one of the areas most affected by the devastating earthquake, which has taken the lives of over 650 people and injured over 16,600.

Local communities in the highlands of Ecuador have felt the direct impact of climate change through the loss of agricultural yields, fishery and tourism. Rosa Maria Cacuango, a smallholder farmer, has directly faced this challenge. Lack of rainfall and frequent droughts led to food insecurity as well as loss of income among her community. But now, Rosa Maria is more resilient, thanks to the “Enhancing Resilience of Communities to the Adverse Effects of Climate Change on Food Security” or the FORECCSA project, implemented by the government with WFP’s support.

When a 7.8-magnitude earthquake struck Ecuador in April, 12-year-old Micaela and her family were living at the epicentre. Now they are struggling to find food and water, but Micaela still holds on to the hope of returning to school.
