Highlights

  • UNICEF, in collaboration with the Playing for Change Foundation and the Ecuadorian band Cocoa Roots, provided psychosocial support to children and adolescents in Chamanga (Esmeraldas). Craig Woodson, Playing for Change facilitator, developed instruments with recycled material in a workshop with 20 children and adolescents and ten teachers, an activity in a regional initiative that seeks to promote children’s right to participate in cultural and artistic activities and to strengthen their role as agents of change.

On Saturday 16 April 2016, an earthquake measuring 7.8 on the Richter scale struck the northern coast of Ecuador reportedly killing over 650 people, injuring thousands and leaving several thousand displaced. The earthquake caused extensive damage to buildings and infrastructure including electricity, water and other public service supply networks. As a result, a state of emergency was declared in the provinces of Esmeraldas, Santo Domingo, Manabí, Guayas, Los Ríos and Santa Elena.

On 16 April 2016, a devastating 7.8 magnitude earthquake hit the coast of Ecuador, killing more than 600 people and leaving tens of thousands in need of assistance.

Eleven Partner organizations have dispatched prepositioned relief items and equipment from Panama, including prefabs, latrines, kitchen, shelter and hygiene kits, tarpaulins, water tanks, and dewatering pumps.

Two charter flights were generously provided by UPS, and one ocean shipment was kindly provided by YachtAid Global.

The Citizen Solidarity and Joint Responsibility Law has raised about US$500 million, as of June, as response to the 16 April earthquake. Authorities have already used $140 million of this amount - $70 million for the province of Esmeraldas. Reconstruction efforts continue in the north coastal areas of Ecuador.

PERÚ: Cerca de 300 toneladas de ayuda humanitaria se enviaron la semana pasada a la provincia de Caylloma, en la región de Arequipa, para asistir a los cerca de 6,000 damnificados por el terremoto que también dejó 4 personas muertas.

Alausí (Chimborazo). Familias de la comunidad Bactinag, en Alausí, que están asentadas en una zona de riesgo, pernoctan en el albergue de Mapaguiña desde el viernes 19 de agosto.

  • To date 8,700 families affected by the earthquake have received cash transfers, benefiting 34,700 people.

  • 100 days after the earthquake, WFP’s operations remain critically underfunded. USD 7.6 million in contributions are needed for WFP’s emergency operations in Ecuador in the next six months.

  • During WFP’s Country Strategic Plan (2017-2021) consultation process, the Government suggested that WFP provide technical assistance, facilitate exchange of experiences and promote strategic alliances.

KEY MESSAGES

  1. Humanitarian and recovery assistance should be provided based on evidenced needs in the affected provinces in rural and urban areas; as well as in and out of government managed camps.

  2. Efforts must be increased to meet the needs of rural communities and vulnerable populations whose needs have been exacerbated by the earthquake.

  3. An official strategy is needed to respond to the basic needs of people in spontaneous sites while simultaneously sustaining with the assistance inside government-managed camps.
