MHub works on behalf of the North Africa Mixed Migration Task Force consisting of DRC, IOM, OHCHR, RMMS, UNHCR and UNODC. It promotes a human rights-based approach to ensuring the protection of people moving in mixed and complex flows to, through and from North Africa.

MHub produces knowledge on the human rights protection issues faced by people on the move in North Africa for use by policy makers, agencies, donors, public and academia, with a view to inform advocacy, policy and program development.

Highlights

  • Over the reporting period (31 March –6 April) countries of first arrival (Italy, Greece, and Bulgaria) saw an average decrease of 33% in numbers of arrivals compared with the previous week. In particular, Italy saw a 59% decrease compared to previous week.

In 2015, Member States reported more than 1 820 000 detections of illegal border-crossing along the external borders.

This never-before-seen figure was more than six times the number of detections reported in 2014, which was itself an unprecedented year, with record monthly averages observed since April 2014.

Highlights

  • The total number of migrants and refugees stranded in Greece and in the Western Balkans is 56,578. For a more detailed look, please see the accommodation pages of Greece, fYROM, Serbia, Croatia and Slovenia.

  • On 18 March , EU leaders met with their Turkish counterpart, Prime Minister of Turkey Ahmed Davutoğlu. They reached an agreement aimed at stopping the flow of irregular migration via Turkey to Europe. The main action points of the agreement are available, please see page 9.

HIGHLIGHTS

  • Italy witnessed a 43% rise of sea arrivals over the last month, compared to December 2014, bucking the seasonal decrease of refugees and migrants arriving by sea and the downward trend registered in the second half of 2015. Arrival trends for December include the steady decrease of Syrians arriving by sea and the continuing proportional increase of Nigerians.

  • At the end of December 2015, the total number of arrivals stands at 153,842 persons, compared to 170,100 in 2014 at the same time, corresponding to a 10% decrease.

HIGHLIGHTS

  • Besides observing a seasonal decrease of refugees and migrants arriving by sea, Italy witnessed a 65% drop of sea arrivals over the last month, compared to November 2014.

  • Arrival trends for November include the steady decrease of Syrians arriving by sea, a slight drop of Sudanese as well as a continuing proportional increase of Nigerian nationals.

  • In November 43 asylum-seekers were relocated to France, Spain, Germany and Sweden under the EU relocation scheme.

Greece - Despite worsening weather conditions, large numbers of migrants and refugees are continuing to arrive in Greece by sea from Turkey. According to Greek police and IOM field staff, over 30,000 migrants and refugees have arrived since the beginning of December. Some 735,000 migrants crossed into Greece the first 11 months of the year.

The number of fatalities in the Aegean has also risen in December. Some 25 people are believed to have died in two shipwrecks off the coasts of Farmakonisi on December 3rd and December 9th. Of them, 15 are still missing.
