Halting land degradation in Niger helps to tackle African desertification

18 July 2013, Kouloumboutey, Niger – When village people and local authorities in southern Niger won back over one hundred hectares of degraded land, they added one extra piece to a mosaic being laid across the Sahel and the Sahara aimed at tackling desertification and land degradation.

Ibrahim Dan Ladi, a 47-year-old farmer from southern Niger, remembers that his village of Kouloumboutey used to be surrounded by thick forest.

  • Despite good agricultural production in 2012 and good conditions for pastoralists, the situation in the Sahel remains critical, mostly due to the impact of the 2012 crisis (food insecurity, floods and Mali conflict) as well as previous recent crises. Approximately 10.3 million people remain food insecure in 2013 and over 1.4 million children are at risk of severe acute malnutrition.

Many cities in sub-Saharan Africa experienced flash and/or Riverine floods in August 2012. Favorable conditions for moderate to heavy precipitation associated to a very active monsoon included an active phase of the MJO, an ENSO in its transition phase toward El Nino and an above normal temperature pattern over the Mediterranean region interacting with the African summer monsoon.
This report describes these patterns, related flooding events and impacts.

Sahel Humanitarian Crisis : Regional Overview - Financial Requirements

Food and nutrition crisis affects over 18 million people in the Sahel

Far from the media spotlight, the Sahel region (Burkina Faso, Mali, Mauritania, Niger, Senegal, Chad, Nigeria, Cameroon, and the Gambia) is grappling with a severe humanitarian emergency as alarming food insecurity and malnutrition conditions have emerged in the wake of drought and poor harvests. 18.7 million people are affected, among them some of the poorest and most vulnerable communities in the world. According to UNICEF, over 1 million children are at risk of severe acute malnutrition across the Sahel.

(Dakar, 17 April 2012). –David Gressly took charges today in Dakar as Regional Humanitarian Coordinator for the Sahel region. David Gressly was appointed by Emergency Relief Coordinator Valerie Amos for a period of six months.

The new severe food and nutrition crisis affecting the Sahel region, compounded by the impact and spillover effects of the complex emergency in Mali, require a regionally coherent and effectively prioritized humanitarian response.

  • Déficits céréalier et fourrager confirmés. La production pour les pays du Sahel enregistre une baisse de 3% par rapport à la moyenne quinquennale et de 26% par rapport à la production agricole 2010/2011.
  • Au 1er avril, la méningite a fait au moins 749 morts et affecté 8.667 personnes en Afrique de l’Ouest et du Centre, soit une létalité de 8,64%.
