EU responds immediately to assist refugees in Algeria

Geneva, 24 February 2006 - In response to an urgent call for emergency funds to assist Sahrawi refugees, whose camps were hit by torrential rains and flooding earlier this month, WFP has announced that the European Commission (EC) has made an immediate donation of 400,000 Euros (US$ 500,000).
"WFP is very grateful for this quick and timely contribution," said Marius de Gaay Fortman, WFP Country Director for Algeria.

WFP immediately responded by taking a loan from the strategic buffer stock funded by the European Commission

La Agencia Española de Cooperación Internacional (AECI) fletó hoy un nuevo avión cargado con ayuda humanitaria destinada a los campamentos saharauis ubicados en Tinduf, Argelia.

Algeria: Tents for the forgotten refugees

Refugees from Western Sahara in Algeria have been seriously affected by flooding and 50,000 people have lost their homes. Norwegian Church Aid is sending an airlift of tents to the affected areas.

En 1975, el Sáhara Occidental dejó de ser provincia del Estado Español. WFP's daunting task: feeding 1.7 million refugees in 2006

GENEVA - As the media and the humanitarian community focus on the spreading drought in the Horn of Africa, the United Nations World Food Programme is deeply concerned that more attention is needed to highlight the persistent problems faced by the world's refugees - most of them in Africa.
WFP is aiming to feed 1.7 million refugees this year and is facing major challenges in raising sufficient resources to do so.

Dans la région de Tindouf, en Algérie, du jeudi 9 février au samedi 11 février, des pluies torrentielles ont détruit une grande partie des camps des réfugiés sahraouis. Plus de 12.200 familles sont sans abri.
Selon le service météorologique de Tindouf, du vendredi matin au samedi à l'aube, 79 mm de pluie sont tombés, soit la quantité enregistrée normallement pendant une période de deux ans. Les destructions dans les camps sont énormes. Les premières estimations parlent de 50 à 60% d'infrastructures détruites.

Support to Algeria in dealing with floods

An estimated 50,000 people have been left homeless after torrential rains and flooding devastated camps around Tindouf in Algeria on 10 and 11 February 06.
The Tindouf area hosts some 90,000 displaced persons living in five camps, three of which are practically destroyed with 50 percent of mud brick houses completely destroyed and 25 percent in an unstable condition.

The Government of Algeria has requested emergency humanitarian assistance from UNHCR .

On 14 February, the EADRCC received a disaster assistance request from UNHCR - through UN-OCHA - for fixed wing

Humanitarian aid sent to Algeria

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has today sent a humanitarian aid flight to Algeria. Aboard are basic commodities valued at approximately 80 thousand euros, bound for the Saharawi people.
The flight departed from Brindisi and arrived the same day in Tindouf. The cargo will be handed over by the Italian Embassy to the Algerian Red Crescent for distribution in the worst affected areas.

Today's flight carried 34 tons of humanitarian aid furnished by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs through the DG for Development

Brief Description: On February 10 and 11, 2006, heavy rainfall caused flooding in the Tindouf Province in southwest Algeria. The floods directly affected camps hosting Sahrawi refugees from Western Sahara and ruined most of the food stock. According to the U.N., the floods destroyed approximately 50 percent of housing, leaving an estimated 50,000 people homeless. The flooding also damaged hospitals, market areas, and most public buildings in the refugee camps. One person reportedly died, and several others were injured.
