NHC/TAFB to provide detailed information for Hispaniola in the Atlantic Tropical Weather Discussion

At the request of Meteo-France and the meteorological services of Haiti and the Dominican Republic, the National Hurricane Center/Tropical Analysis and Forecast Branch (TAFB) will begin providing, on a temporary basis, a separate detailed section within the Atlantic Tropical Weather Discussion (TWD). It will cover both Haiti and Dominican Republic due to the shared geography of both countries on the island of Hispaniola.

  • Un fuerte compromiso por parte de los socios humanitarios es necesario sobre el tema de la violencia. 41 de las 50 ciudades más peligrosas del mundo están en América Latina y el Caribe.

Climate Prediction Center’s Hispaniola Hazards Outlook For USAID / FEWS-NET May 2 – May 8, 2013

Rainfall continued to be unevenly distributed over Hispaniola during the past week. The bulk (30 – 75 mm) of the rainfall fell over portions of the Ouest department of Haiti and neighboring west-central Dominican Republic, whereas little to light rain was received elsewhere. Compared to climatology, this past week’s rainfall totals were average to below-average, with the largest deficits observed over central Haiti.

30 de abril, 2013 — La Organización Internacional para las Migraciones (OIM) provee asistencia para el retorno voluntario a su país de más de 300 migrantes haitianos que viven en la República Dominicana.

Hoy partieron 308 de esas personas a sus ciudades de origen ubicadas al norte de Haití, en convoyes escoltados por funcionarios de la OIM y por oficiales del gobierno dominicano.

IOM Helps 300 Haitian Migrants to Return Home Voluntarily from Dominican Republic

IOM is today providing voluntary return assistance, in coordination with the Dominican and Haitian authorities, to more than 300 vulnerable Haitian migrants living in the Dominican Republic who wish to return to their communities in Haiti.

Today’s group of 308 returnees, who have been in the Dominican Republic for an average of 5 years, are returning to their places of origin in the northern Haitian towns of Cap Haitien, Fort Liberté, Limbe, Milot Pilate, and Plaisance. They will be escorted by IOM staff and government migration officials.

In the Armenian village of Aragatsavan, residents had struggled for more than two decades to secure clean drinking water.

The community’s Soviet-era reservoir was contaminated, and leaked more than 70 tons of water a day. It was limiting access to water for 5,600 residents; 120 families had no water at all.

During a town hall meeting facilitated by Counterpart International, the community agreed it had to take action.

Full-scale test today of Caribbean tsunami warning system

Thirty-two countries* will participate in a full-scale tsunami alert exercise in the Caribbean on 20 March 2013. The goal is to test the reaction capacity in countries of the Caribbean and adjacent regions, including the East Coast of Canada and the United States, the Gulf of Mexico and Bermuda. The exercise was organized under the auspices of UNESCO’s Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC).
