  1. INTRODUCTION

UNHCR chief visits Somalia, Djibouti to highlight plight of the displaced

OBOCK, Djibouti, December 7 (UNHCR) - A chance encounter last weekend in a Djibouti port with António Guterres, head of the UN refugee agency, may have saved the life of a 14-year-old Ethiopian called Ahmed.*

The teenager met the High Commissioner for Refugees as he waited in Obock for a smuggler's boat to take him and about 30 other hungry and tired Ethiopians across the choppy, dangerous waters of the Gulf of Aden to Yemen and hopes of a better life. Ahmed had walked through the desert for seven days to reach the port, a popular embarkation

Consolidated Appeals Process (CAP): Humanitarian Appeal 2011

Introduction

In 2011, tens of millions of people will need emergency aid to survive. Conflicts and natural disasters have cut them off from their homes, their livelihoods, and access to essentials like drinking water and health care. They already suffer or are imminently threatened by malnourishment, disease, or violence. Most are poor people who have few if any means to cope with these traumas. This Appeal asks for the resources needed to deliver to these people the best possible help, in time.

DJIBOUTI Food Security Outlook Update November 2010

Food security likely to deteriorate in pastoral areas due to below-normal rains

Key messages

- The weak onset of heys/dada rains (October to March), coupled with forecast normal to below?normal rainfall conditions in the region resulting from La Niña , does not bode well for the performance of this rainy season. November rains, which have to date been below normal, are particularly critical for the timely regeneration of rangeland in support of the early stages of pregnancy for livestock, especially goats. Given that these rains are just beginning, however, most
