Barentu, 27 December 2009 - The inhabitants of various areas of Gash-Barka region stated that the unjust resolution adopted by the nominal United Nations, which has been rendered to being a mere tool for a handful of interest groups, would only further reinforce the Eritrean peoples' resolve.

In their interview with ERINA, the inhabitants of Gash Barka pointed out that the unwarranted resolution is not a new phenomenon but is rather an extension of continued unprovoked ploys against Eritrea. They further explained that the imposed sanction is merely a plot

Hostile Shores - Abuse and Refoulement of Asylum Seekers and Refugees in Yemen

Summary

For several years, tens of thousands of asylum seekers and refugees fleeing to Yemen from the volatile Horn of Africa region have endured terrible human rights abuses that have gone largely ignored by the outside world. Many have suffered violence or lost their lives while attempting the perilous sea crossing from the Horn. And the reception that awaits those who survive the journey depends not on why they have come but on where they come from.

Since the beginning of 2008, more than 100,000 people have set off to Yemen in boats from Djibouti or the Somali

Economic drivers of conflict and cooperation in the Horn of Africa: a regional perspective and overview

Report
Chatham House
Summary points

Press conference on humanitarian operations in Somalia

Unless it received new funding from donors immediately, United Nations humanitarian operations in Somalia would begin 2010 with "zero" in the bank, a "life-threatening" situation that could trigger a spillover of people into neighbouring states like Djibouti, Ethiopia and Kenya, said Mark Bowden, United Nations Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator for Somalia.

Addressing journalists at an afternoon press conference on the humanitarian situation in that country, he said Somalia was the setting for a long-running humanitarian crisis, brought

Press conference by UN SC President

Burkina Faso, December's President of the Security Council, had organized an open debate on "drug trafficking as a threat to international security" on 8 December, that country's Permanent Representative Michel Kafando said today at Headquarters.

Briefing correspondents on the Council's programme of work for the coming month, the subject for that debate was a timely choice, as drug trafficking in West African States such as Guinea Bissau, Guinea and Cape Verde had taken on worrying dimensions and was afflicting not only the subregion, but also countries in Latin America
