Northern Horn of Africa

Climatology is expected across most of the region, except locally over northwestern and southwestern Sudan, where there is a slight tilt in the odds favoring below normal rainfall. There is a slight tilt in the odds favoring above normal rainfall locally over eastern Ethiopia, northern Somalia, and portions of Djibouti. Climatology is expected elsewhere.

IGAD workshop report on the avian influenza hazard

Introduction
Workshop on Avian Influenza organized by IGAD Secretariat was convened from 21-22 December 2005 at Palais du Peuple, Djibouti. The participants of the Workshop included representatives from the IGAD member states: from the Veterinary departments, Ministries of Health and Wildlife authorities and from other partner organizations- WHO, FAO and AU/ABAR, represented during this Workshop. All IGAD member states except Eritrea were represented in the Workshop.

The objectives of the Workshop were to discuss how to manage and mitigate the risk of disaster of the Avian Influenza

State Department releases chronology of activities spanning 143 years

The United States has spent more than a billion dollars in the past dozen years on humanitarian land mine removal efforts around the world.

This money has been spent to remove land mines, pay for educational messages on the risks posed by mines, help victims of mine injuries, and fund research and development to improve existing humanitarian mine removal programs.

The outlook for March-May 2006 southern Africa rainfall at four months lead shows a tilt in the odds favoring below normal rainfall across Namibia and locally over western Botswana. There is a tilt in the odds favoring above normal rainfall over southern and northern Angola, portions of central and northeastern Zambia, northern Mozambique, Malawi, and portions of southern Tanzania.

Report of the scenario development and humanitarian analysis workshop for countries of the Horn of Africa - Nov 2005

The Regional Scenario Development workshop for the Greater Horn of Africa region took place on 2-3 November in the Ballroom of the Norfolk Hotel in Nairobi. Regional representations from UN, INGOs, and donors joined their respective colleagues from countries in the region to provide a fairly comprehensive and complementary perspective and analysis of recent and forecasted regional events.
In addition to its objective to give primary focus to events with regional or cross border significance, this workshop also made a more concerted attempt to work out the basic elements
