Africa faces unprecendented hunger crisis, U.N. says

New York (dpa) - At least 38 million people in Africa are threatened by hunger, caused mostly by a drought that is extending from the Horn of Africa to the southern part of the continent, the World Food Programme (WFP) said Tuesday.

WFP director James Morris told the U.N. Security Council in an open meeting that the lack of political will remains the only obstacle to help those in needs.

Early pledges for 2003 UNHCR budget reach $317 million

GENEVA -- Donor governments on Tuesday pledged another $280 million towards UNHCR's worldwide programs for 2003, bringing the total promised contributions to date to a record $317 million. This amounts to nearly one- third of the refugee agency's 2003 total projected needs of more than $1 billion.

USAID response to the food security crisis in Africa

WASHINGTON - From now through 2003, up to 35 million people in Africa will need food aid. The U.S. Agency for International Development is working with its partners--the World Food Program, other donors, and the private voluntary community--to deliver up to 2.75 million metric tons of food to help meet this need. There is increased likelihood of near-normal to below-normal rainfall over much of Tanzania, much of Kenya, southern Ethiopia, southern and northern Somalia and parts of southern Sudan. Enhanced probabilities of above normal rainfall favour the rest of Somalia for the period September to December 2002. However, probabilities are favouring normal to above-normal rainfall over parts of southern and northwestern Tanzania, Burundi, Rwanda, Uganda, southwestern Kenya and extreme southern, parts of central and northeastern Sudan as well as parts of central Ethiopia
