The UN this week received letters of expulsion for three international staff members from the self-declared state of Puntland in northeastern Somalia. The UN Resident Coordinator, in collaboration with WFP, UNHCR, UNICEF and WHO as well as with the Ministry of Interior, has prepared an overview, which is summarized below.

Current Activities

1. Food has been primarily provided by the Government, WFP, Saudi Arabia and Sudan. (See table of contributions). Distribution is ongoing in all affected provinces: Ali Sabieh, Dikhil, Tadjourah, Obock, Djibouti for over 100,000 beneficiaries.

Africa's Human Rights Situation Is Cause For Concern

KIGALI, Rwanda (PANA) - Africa's human rights situation is continuing to arouse a great deal of concern in several countries, noted the 26th ordinary session of the African Commission of Human and Peoples' Rights (ACHPR) which ended on Monday in Kigali.
The 26-point communique adopted at the end of the proceedings, stated that various non-governmental organisations expressed "their concern" about the human rights situation in Sierra Leone, Liberia, Algeria, Chad, Sudan, Djibouti, Somalia, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Uganda, DR Congo, Burundi, Congo Brazzaville, Cameroon and Angola.

Djibouti: IRIN Focus on mounting tension with Eritrea

NAIROBI, 12 November (IRIN) - Djibouti President Ismail Omar Guelleh, elected in May, on Thursday warned of deteriorating relations between his country and Eritrea. In a BBC interview, he accused Eritrea of supporting Djiboutian rebels and said the two countries were "almost in a state of war".
Djibouti, whose Red Sea port is a vital lifeline for landlocked Ethiopia, risks becoming embroiled in the 18-month Ethiopia-Eritrea conflict, regional analysts said. However, an Eritrean spokesman told IRIN on Friday the new allegations were "ridiculous".

ERITREA: Deportations by Ethiopia condemned
Eritrea has condemned the deportations of 1,400 Eritreans by Ethiopia over the weekend. The Eritrean news agency ERINA said the Eritreans were picked up in Addis Ababa and "dumped" on the Bure front in "dangerous no-man's land" where they crossed the border. ICRC spokesman Juan Martinez told IRIN on Tuesday that his organisation was concerned over the deportations, as the necessary safety conditions had not been guaranteed. ETHIOPIA: More food aid required
Ethiopia's Federal Disaster Prevention and Preparedness Commission has said over 274,000 mt of food assistance is needed up to December this year to rehabilitate people affected by food shortages in the country. According to the Ethopian News Agency, it said some 200,000 mt had already been pledged by donors, but it further urged the donor community to offset the remaining 74,023 mt of relief food. The number of needy people had grown from 5.3 million in July to seven million currently, the commission said.

SOMALIA: Top official emphasises new UN commitment
UN Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs Sergio Vieira De Mello said during a visit to Somalia on Wednesday that the country had been neglected by the international community in recent years but that his visit, specifically requested by UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan, should be seen as symbolic of a new commitment by the United Nations to helping Somalis in their search for peace and development.
