IOM is appealing for US$177 million to address the vital needs of migrants and internally displaced victims of conflict and natural disasters around the world.

The call for funding is part of the United Nations Consolidated Appeals Process (CAP) - a process designed to ensure all needs and requirements are fully coordinated with humanitarian partners.

Funding needed to build strength against crisis

Rome, 23 March 2012 - FAO today urgently appealed for $50 million to cover the funding gap for priority agricultural and pastoral activities that must be carried out in the Horn of Africa before and during the next planting season, which coincides with the rainy season from April to June.

1. Executive Summary

The crisis in the Horn of Africa is the most severe food security emergency in the world today. With areas facing one of the driest years since 1950/51, food crises have escalated into famine in parts of southern Somalia (Bakool and Lower Shabelle), with acute and food livelihood crises and humanitarian emergencies affecting other countries in the region.

The Horn of Africa region is facing one of the driest years since 1950/51, causing a food crisis that has escalated into famine in parts of southern Somalia. At the end of July 2011, some 12.4 million people are in need of urgent assistance to not only save their lives, but also to recover their livelihoods, ensure their food security does not deteriorate further in the next six months, and start to build their resilience in order to mitigate the impact of future crises of this nature.
