Enhancing resilience in the Horn of Africa: An exploration into alternative investment options

The most recent (2010–2011) drought in the arid and semiarid lowlands (ASAL) of the Horn of Africa has rendered over 13 million people in need of food, and caused a devastating famine in southern Somalia. The drought has also raised concerns that pastoralist livelihoods in this region are no longer viable or sustainable, thereby justifying strategies that aim to sedentarize and diversify these livelihoods. Countering this view are advocates of wholesale protection of pastoralist livelihoods.

Food prices update September 2012

*Little change to estimates of cereals harvests

Maize and wheat prices remain high, but may have peaked*

KEY POINTS

  • Estimates of cereal harvests have changed little from August to September. Further cuts to estimates of the already bad US maize harvest have been quite small.

  • Hence the sharp price rises seen in the maize and wheat markets in July have probably reached their limit — even if at more than US$320 a tonne for maize, US$365 a tonne for wheat, prices are high.

Regional approaches to food security in Africa

In 2003 the Comprehensive Africa Agriculture Development Programme (CAADP) was established by the assembly of the African Union (AU) aiming to raise agricultural productivity by at least 6% per year and increasing public investment in agriculture to 10% of national budgets per year. After an initial phase focused primarily on interventions at the national level, there is growing awareness on the need to work more on the regional dimensions of the CAADP.

Environmental Migration: Policy Gaps and Response Strategies

Chris Perry

By 2050, 25 million to 1 billion people are expected to be migrating due to environmental factors. Though examining linkages between environmental conditions and migration have been on the international agenda at least since 1992, only in recent years have they become better understood. It is clear today that the environment and environmental change impact migration. They do this by influencing the socioeconomic, political, and cultural drivers that lead people to move.
