Sri Lankan asylum seekers sent home

Australia has sent another group of Sri Lankan asylum seekers home from Christmas Island.

The 50 men arrived in Australia on asylum seeker boats but the Australian Government says they did not make claims that triggered Australia's refugee obligations.

It says the deportations send a clear message, "that people who pay smugglers are risking their lives and throwing their money away".

More than 380 men have been voluntarily and involuntarily sent home to Sri Lanka, since Australia's government resumed offshore processing in August.

UN refugee agency concerned by Manus Island transfers

Updated 12 October 2012, 14:38 AEST

The United Nations' High Commissioner for Refugees has raised serious questions about Australia's plan to transfer asylum seekers to Papua New Guinea.

In a letter to the Australian Government, António Guterres says Papua New Guinea does not have the capacity to shoulder the responsibility of processing asylum seekers.

He says the government has indicated it will be handing legal responsibility to PNG authorities, but points out there is no effective legal or regulatory framework in the country to deal with refugees.

Asia Pacific: Regional Partnerships - ASEAN, SAARC and SPC: Regional Reference Map issued 01 May 2011

The Asia-Pacific region contains a diverse array of cultures, environments, and societies. One of the fastest growing economic regions in the world, it is also the most disaster-prone. While natural disasters affect the region frequently, as this region continues along its path of development, regional partnerships will be essential in developing the capacities of countries to reduce risk and vulnerability, and to respond to disasters.
