This issue focuses on the Yellow fever, Cholera, Zika Virus Disease and Chikungunya outbreaks.

During the period under review, there have been protracted urban Yellow Fever (YF) outbreaks in Angola that have spread to the neighboring DR Congo and there have been exported cases to China and Kenya. Another outbreak of Yellow Fever was reported in Uganda but was not epidemiologically linked to the Angola or DR Congo outbreaks. The Uganda YF outbreak was rapidly and effectively contained.

Cape Verde has evacuated 300 people from Brava in the south of the archipelago in the Atlantic Ocean for fear of a volcanic eruption after abnormal seismic activity beginning of August.

There were low intensity tremors on the coastal parts of Brava, which is the smallest island of the country. "Data from the National Institute of Meteorology and Geophysics demonstrate the intensifying seismic activity on the island of Brava. If this activity continues, we could possibly have a volcanic eruption."

OVER 1,700 HOUSEHOLDS DEPRIVED OF ASSISTANCE

Poor road infrastructure throughout the country continues to hamper humanitarian access, particularly during the rainy season.
Due to damaged roads, food distribution has been suspended to 1,712 vulnerable households in the Gazi sub-province since the end of June. The Logistics Cluster leads an initiative to mobilize resources to improve road access.

MapAction has sent a volunteer mapping professional to Cape Verde to support the United Nations following seismic activity and the risk that this may stimulate a volcanic eruption.

Between 1-2 August abnormal seismic activity was recorded on the island of Brava, the most southern island of Cape Verde. Scientist and experts are monitoring the situation and have advised that the authorities should be prepared for a possible volcanic eruption. Contingency plans are being drawn up for an evacuation of the island’s 6,000 inhabitants if required.

As of 3 August 2016, 68 countries and territories (Fig. 1, Table 1) have reported evidence of mosquito-borne Zika virus transmission since 2007 (65 of these countries and territories have reported evidence of mosquito-borne Zika virus transmission since 2015):

 51 countries and territories with a first reported outbreak from 2015 onwards (Table 1).

 Four countries are classified as having possible endemic transmission or have reported evidence of local mosquito-borne Zika infections in 2016.

• On 01 and 02 August abnormal seismic activity has been recorded on Brava, the most southern island of Cape Verde with a population of 6 000 people.

• The epicentre is located between Cova Joana and Benfica. About 300 people from these two places were evacuated.

• Brava is a stratovolcano; No historical eruptions have been documented.

• The volcano lies in the lee of the bigger Fogo volcano, which has had eruptions in the past years (1995; 2014). The EUCPM was activated in 2014.

With nearly two years since the last case of wild polio on the continent, the Africa Regional Certification Commission has met to review progress.

The annual meeting of the Africa Regional Certification Commission (ARCC) for the Eradication of Polio took place in Algeria from 27 June–01 July 2016 to assess progress towards the certification of the African region as polio-free. A Secretariat comprised of representatives of the World Health Organization (WHO) from the African region chaired the meeting of 47 African Member states, represented by National Polio Committees.
