Colombia and Marxist FARC rebels will ink their landmark peace deal officially late next month, authorities said Saturday.

"The solemn date of the signing will be between September 20 and 26, depending on the schedules and the dignitaries who will be in attendance," said Defense Minister Luis Carlos Villegas.

Villegas did not say who would attend the official signing, nor did he give its venue. President Juan Manuel Santos has said it could be at UN headquarters, in Bogota or in Cuba.

The announcement that the Colombian government and the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC) have reached a deal to end the five decade-old armed conflict is a momentous and long-awaited development that brings hope that peace will at last be possible, said Amnesty International.

In Cuba, the two sides announced that, after almost four years of official talks, they had settled all the major outstanding issues. The 297-page agreement covers a range of issues, such as rural reform, political participation, drugs trafficking and victims’ rights.

Now that an agreement has been reached between the Colombian government and the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC), the current generation of Colombian youth will have a chance to see something they’ve never fully experienced before – peace.

The agreement seeks to end the longest-running conflict in the world, which dates back to 1964 and has claimed 220,000 lives and forced approximately six million people from their home and land, a national total second only to Syria.

Danish Refugee Council applauds the achievement of a historic peace agreement in Colombia, after decades of bloody conflict. The document was signed by the Colombian government and the insurgent group FARC was signed last night. According to DRC’s Demining unit, the Danish Demining Group (DDG) it will pave the way for the elimination of landmines and explosive remnants of war. Colombia has registered more than 11.000 accidents maiming a large number of civilians between 1990 and 2015 and is currently one of the most mine-affected countries in the world.
