ROMA –Por más de dos años el mundo ha visto como millones de sirios han dejado sus casas para huir de la violencia y buscar un refugio seguro. Muchas familias han sido obligadas a desplazarse más de una vez, llevando consigo solo lo que pueden cargar. Las necesidades de los sirios son enormes, demasiado grandes para ser comprendidas: al finalizar el año, el Programa Mundial de Alimentos de las Naciones (PMA) planea proveer asistencia alimentaria a siete millones de personas, de las cuales la mayoría son desplazados internos o que buscan refugio en países vecinos.

Globally, 16 million girls aged 15-19 years and two million girls under age 15 give birth every year. In the poorest regions of the world, this translates to roughly one in three girls bearing children by the age of 18.

Adolescent girls are at the highest risk of maternal death: the risk of pregnancy-related death is twice as high for girls aged 15-19 and five times higher for girls aged 10-14 compared to women in their twenties.

As on every June 12, the World Day Against Child Labour highlights the plight of the millions of children compelled to work, often in hazardous environments and endangering their physical and mental health. Mine Ban Treaty Intersessional Meeting – Highs and Lows for Mine Ban Community

(3 June 2013) The Mine Ban Treaty Intersessional Standing Committee (ISC) Meetings that took place last week opened with disturbing news of credible reports which, if confirmed, would constitute the most serious violation the treaty has ever confronted: extensive use of antipersonnel mines by government forces in Yemen, as reported by ICBL member HRW, and Foreign Policy Magazine.

The Syrian crisis continues to draw in its neighbours, threatening to set off a wider regional conflict. Israel launched its first major strike inside Syria, sending jets reportedly to target Iranian missiles bound for Hizbollah. The Syrian regime threatened to retaliate immediately and harshly to any further attack, and to turn the Golan Heights into a new front against Israel. The EU lifted its arms embargo on Syria but said there were no immediate plans to arm the rebels.

Many states fail in their responsibilities to their citizens but those states which are fragile, failed or weak are particularly liable to render their citizens vulnerable. Failures of authority or legitimacy can lead to the emergence of significant organised violence; the impact of this can then be compounded by the failure of the state to protect its citizens, especially minorities.
