Refugee situation in Côte d'Ivoire 31 October 2012

Côte d'Ivoire continues to host more than 9'400 Refugees within its borders; the majority of which are from Liberia and have been living in the country for more than 20 years. Since February 2012, UNHCR has facilitated the return of more than 12'000 registered Liberians from Côte d'Ivoire. UNHCR is also planning to assist another 5'700 Liberian Refugees wishing to return home voluntarily.

African Development Bank approves US$63M multi-CGIAR Center continental research-for-development initiative

The African Development Bank (AfDB) has approved a US$ 63.24 million fund package for the implementation of a 5-year project dubbed “Support to Agricultural Research for Development of Strategic Crops in Africa” (SARD-SC).

The SARD-SC is a research, science, and technology development initiative aimed at enhancing the productivity and income derived from cassava, maize, rice, and wheat – four of the six commodities that African Heads of States, through the Comprehensive African Agricultural Development Program, have defined as strategic crops for Africa.

12 May 2011 – The unrest across North Africa and the Middle East and the crises and challenges in other parts of the world topped the agenda during talks between General Assembly President Joseph Deiss and the Security Council’s current President.

Mr. Deiss and Ambassador Gérard Araud of France, which holds the rotating Council presidency during May, met yesterday and discussed the situations in Syria, Libya, Sudan, Somalia, Cote d’Ivoire and the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), among others.

Small arms: Report of the Secretary-General (S/2011/255)

Summary

In his 2008 report on small arms (S/2008/258), the Secretary-General provided an overview of the negative impact of illicit small arms on security, human rights and social and economic development, in particular in areas of conflict. The report indicated that the issue of small arms could not be addressed with arms control measures alone; such measures needed to be part of a wider spectrum of policy solutions in which security, crime, human rights, health and development intersected.
