Polio this week - As of 13 February 2013

  • On 8 February, two health facilities in Kano state, Nigeria, were attacked, killing eleven people, including health workers, and injuring several others.
  • Such attacks on health workers are absolutely and unconditionally unacceptable, and must be condemned in the strongest terms. Our sympathy goes out to the victims and their families. It is yet another example of the heroic and courageous work of frontline health workers, often working under extremely dangerous conditions in efforts to ensure the health of populations everywhere no matter where they live.

Refugees in Nigeria devise survival strategies as help dwindles

by Ade Obisesan
ORU-IJEBU, Nigeria, July 11 (AFP) - More than a decade after they began fleeing Africa's brutal civil wars, the forgotten exiles in this Nigerian camp are still striving to survive.

As the world's attention drifts to new conflicts and famines, more than 3,000 African refugees, mainly Sierra Leoneans and Liberians, have learned that they must fend for themselves.

"I have to survive. We are at a crossroad. We survive in a pit of poverty," says Dennis Popei, a Liberian accountant who fled the fighting in his country in September 1990.
