Fighting claims 14 lives around strategic Kindu in DRC: rebels

KIGALI, Oct 1 (AFP) - Rebels in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo fought off a joint assault by government troops and their militia allies on the strategic town of Kindu at a cost of at least 14 lives, the rebels said.
"The assailants, a combined group of the Congolese Armed Forces, Interahamwe (Rwandan Hutu extremist militia) and Mai-Mai (local tribal militias), with the latter predominant, briefly seized the town and part of the airport," rebel spokesman Jean-Pierre Lola Kisanga said late Sunday.

DR of Congo: UN reports urge steps on human rights and economic recovery

Agreement, funds short ahead of DR Congo peace talks: mediator

NAIROBI, Sept 28 (AFP) - Preparations for peace talks among the government, the political opposition and rebel movements in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) have run into last-minute obstacles, a mediator said Friday.

The representation in negotiations of DRC militia forces is one problem and finance is another, said Hacen Ould Lebatt, the troubleshooter mediating among parties ahead of the talks due to begin on October 15 in Addis Ababa.

WFP makes urgent appeal to restart airlift in war-torn Congo

NAIROBI - The UN World Food Programme (WFP) today urgently appealed for US$378,000 to restart an emergency food airlift operation in early October for thousands of people trapped in the war-torn Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).
The operation, WFP's second life-saving airlift in eastern DRC in three months, will allow the agency to transport food aid to at least 25,000 people in DRC's Northern Katanga province who are still cut off by war.

Cash from WFP's emergency fund will kick-start the operation but more money is needed immediately as the humanitarian

A rapid evaluation and assessment coordination team has been asked to assemble on Friday and recommend the type of aid needed for some 20,000 people displaced by recent fighting in Bujumbura-Rurale Province, western Burundi, the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) reported.
