AFRICA: HIV/AIDS figures stabilise

For the first time, there are signs that new HIV/AIDS infections may have stabilised in some parts of sub-Saharan Africa, UNAIDS said in its annual epidemic update released on Tuesday. New infections in 2000 totalled an estimated 3.8 million compared with 4 million in 1999, the 'AIDS Epidemic Update: December 2000' revealed.

RWANDA: Security Council expands ICTR capacity

The UN Security Council on Thursday moved to expand the capacity of the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda (ICTR) by providing for two additional judges, to be elected as soon as possible. It also allowed for a new pool of judges to speed up the processing

Le sommet de Maputo à la une de la presse de Kinshasa

Les journaux parus cette semaine à Kinshasa, ont largement commenté le "sommet de Maputo II", consacré à la crise en République démocratique du Congo (RDC).

Congo, Uganda call for implementation of Lusaka peace accord on DRCongo

KAMPALA, Nov 30 (AFP) - Presidents Yoweri Museveni of Uganda and Dennis Sassou-Nguesso of Congo on Thursday appealed to all those involved in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) conflict to do all they could to ensure the Lusaka Peace accord was implemented.
A communique issued at the end of a two-day official visit to Uganda by Sassou-Nguesso quoted the two leaders as saying: "We believe we should not lose hope. The Lusaka peace accord will be implemented and there will be peace in the DRC. That is what we are trying to achieve."

ZIMBABWE: Mbeki and Obasanjo fly in for mini-summit
The presidents of Africa's two most powerful nations held a mini-summit on Thursday with President Robert Mugabe of Zimbabwe, agencies reported. President Thabo Mbeki of South Africa flew in to Harare about an hour before Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo. Annan heads to Africa and Conference on Organized Crime in Palermo

Secretary-General Kofi Annan leaves today for a visit to four African countries -- Sierra Leone, Benin, Ethiopia and Eritrea -- in a two-week trip that will wrap up at a major anti-crime conference in Italy.
Mr. Annan will begin his trip with a stop tonight in Geneva, where he will meet with his Special Representative in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Kamel Morjane.

    Summit On DRC Claims Success

    Maputo, Mozambique - The summit on the war in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) that ended in Maputo Monday decided to push ahead with a programme of disarming "residual forces", and implementing the "Kampala Plan", under United Nations supervision.
