No country immune to criticism in Area of Human Rights, say speakers in Third Committee

No country’s human rights record was perfect, and States should offer help rather than blame when it came to ensuring human rights for the world's vulnerable, the Third Committee (Social, Humanitarian and Cultural) was told this afternoon as it continued discussing human rights issues.

The representative of Canada said that the Millennium Summit had reinforced the role of the United Nations in protecting vulnerable people by reinforcing humanitarian law and building a culture of respect for human rights in all States.

RDC: Réhabilitation des ouvrages du milieu rural

Kinshasa, RD Congo
Le ministère congolais de l'Agriculture et de l'Elévage a entrepris un vaste programme de réhabilitation des ouvrages d'alimentation en eau potable dissiminés à travers les provinces de la RD Congo, indique un rapport officiel parvenu mercredi au bureau de la PANA à Kinshasa.

Ce programme est piloté par le Service national de l'hydraulique rurale (SNTHR) du ministère de l'Agriculture et de l'Elévage, précise le rapport.

Les travaux, qui concernent essentiellement la réhabilitation de pompes à eau et l'aménagement des puits, sont exécutés

ANGOLA: UNHCR prepares for refugee flight to DRC
UNHCR said on Tuesday its offices in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) were preparing for an influx of up to 18,000 refugees from neighbouring Angola. UNHCR has received reports that between 15,000 and 18,000 displaced Angolans have gathered in border villages waiting to cross into the DRC province of South Badundu, southeast of Kinshasa, UNHCR spokesman Kris Janowski said.

"They are fleeing intensified clashes between government forces and UNITA rebels in Angola's Lunda Norte province.

Congolese rebel leader apologizes for shooting of UN helicopter

A rebel leader in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) has apologized for an incident in which a United Nations helicopter was hit by small arms fire, a UN spokesman announced today.
There were no casualties when the helicopter was hit yesterday over the town of Zongo in the northern part of the DRC. It later landed safely at Bangui airport.

Rebels shoot at UN helicopter in DRCongo

KINSHASA, Oct 30 (AFP) - Rebels shot at a UN helicopter flying over a zone under rebel control in northern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), according to a UN spokesman in Kinshasa.
No-one was hurt in the attack and the helicopter touched down later without any problems at Bangui, UN spokesman Juan Pekmes said.

It had come from Gbadolite, where the rebel Movement for the Liberation of Congo (MLC) has its headquarters.

DRC: Rebel leader resigns admitting "errors"

NAIROBI, 30 October (IRIN) - The governing Rassemblement congolais pour la democratie (RCD), based in the eastern Congolese town of Goma, has carried out a major reshuffle after its leader Emile Ilunga resigned at the weekend.

Summit Calls On Aggressors to Withdraw From DRC

Kinshasa, Congo - Central African leaders have called for "the unconditional withdrawal of aggressors" from the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), as a way of ending the country's conflict.
