DRC Calls for Amendment of Lusaka Peace Accord

HARARE (Sept. 1) XINHUA - Ambassador of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) to Zimbabwe Kikaya Bin Karubi Friday held that the Lusaka Cease-fire Agreement signed in July last year should be amended in view of various developments on the ground.
He said this at a graduation ceremony for 35 participants from all Southern African Development Community (SADC) countries who had completed a three-week United Nations staff officers course conducted by the Regional Peacekeeping Training Centre in Harare.

Annan Names Special Envoy for Congo

UNITED NATIONS (Aug. 18) XINHUA - U.N. Secretary-General Kofi Annan has appointed General Abdulsalami Abubakar of Nigeria as his special envoy dealing with the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), U.N. spokesman Manoel de Almeida e Silva announced Friday.
Annan intends to send Abubakar, former head of state of Nigeria to the subregion within the next few days to "make clear once more " the position of the Security Council and the role of the U.N. Mission to the DRC, known as the MONUC, Almeida e Silva said.
