DR Congo: Lost and bewildered

IFRC WEEKLY NEWS 04/99
29 January 1999
The children stood hand in hand, lost and bewildered. Around them in the early rainy season mud milled hundreds of Congolese, fresh arrivals in Lugufu, a Red Cross refugee camp in western Tanzania. "So who are you?" asked a Red Cross worker, kneeling to speak to them. The little girl said her name was Riziki. She was ten. Her brother, Jean-Marie, was 11. They were from a once obscure village in South Kivu now known around the world as a possible scene of indiscriminate killing, and they were alone.

UNHCR Briefing Notes: Update on DR Congo and Kenya

This is a summary of what was said by the UNHCR spokesperson at today's press briefing at the Palais des Nations.
Congolese in Tanzania

More than 30,800 refugees from the Democratic Republic of Congo have now left South Kivu for Tanzania since the rebellion began last August. UNHCR staff in Kigoma report that the flow shows no signs of abating, with five or six vessels arriving daily in Tanzania and refugees saying that a lack of boats and the cost of the fare ($10 US) for the crossing are all that is stopping more Congolese from leaving.

Congolese troops loot Central African town

BANGUI, Jan 28 (Reuters) - Congolese troops fleeing advancing rebels in the former Zaire have fled across the border into Central African Republic, looting and harassing local people, residents and church sources said on Thursday.
The member of parliament for the area, Charles Armel Doubane, told Reuters that 2,200 soldiers from the Democratic Republic of the Congo had entered the town of Zemio on January 8.

They had been based in Gbadolite, the northern Congolese hometown of the ex-Zaire's late dictator Mobutu Sese Seko, which is just across the border from Zemio, a town of

WFP forced to launch additional food airlifts to Brazzaville to stem growing humanitarian crsisis

Abidjan -- The UN World Food Programme today resumed its airlift to the beleaguered city of Brazzaville, Republic of Congo (ROC), to halt the rapidly deteriorating situation gripping over 50,000 people.
This morning the agency began a 1,000-ton food airlift, one of the largest to the Central Africa region in over a year. The operation utilizes five Antonov aircraft making daily food shuttles to Brazzaville, from the port city of Pointe Noire, where WFP had pre-positioned emergency food stocks last August in anticipation of continued conflict in the region.
