The Department of Humanitarian Affairs
(DHA) is sending a volcanologist into Goma to immediately assess the current
level of risk, in the event of a volcanic eruption, to people living in
the Goma area, including refugees from Rwanda living in the camps.
The DHA expert is Professor Dario Tedesco,
an Italian volcanologist formerly with the Osservatorio Vesuviano and currently
visiting professor at Okayama University in Japan. He has experience
in the management of volcanic phenomena which threaten human settlements.
