Le 28 janvier 2008, dans le cadre d'une mission militaire conjointe MONUC-FARDC à Isiro, le commandant de la 9ème Région militaire, le Général Jean-Claude Kifwa, en compagnie de responsables militaires des FARDC et de la MONUC, s'est rendu à Isiro, chef-lieu du district du Haut-Uélé, situé à environ 500 km au nord-est de Kisangani.

Face à l'ampleur de l'épidémie, l'OMS décide d'envoyer dans le Katanga plus de 9 tonnes de médicaments en faveur des malades. D'autres moyens fi nanciers supplémentaires ont été mobilisés pour la motivation du personnel soignant de Likasi. In a joint MONUC-FARDC military mission to Isiro on 28 January 2008, the FARDC 9th Region Military Commander General Jean-Claude Kifwa along with FARDC and MONUC officials visited Isiro, headquarters of Haut-Uélé district, around 500 km north-east of Kisangani.

The mission objective was to inspect local FARDC troops, as well as to sensitise the troops on human rights abuses, following complaints from the population about military and security related problems in the district.

The President has authorized the use of $32 million from the U.S. Emergency Refugee and Migration Assistance (ERMA) Fund to meet unexpected urgent refugee protection and assistance needs related to the deteriorating humanitarian situation in the West Bank and Gaza and to conflicts in Somalia, the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), the Central African Republic (CAR), and Sudan and Chad, and to support the return and reintegration of Mauritanian refugees to Mauritania.

The drawdown provides $14 million to

UNHCR Burundi main operational activities

1. Repatriation and reintegration of Burundian refugees.

2. Assistance and protection of 32,642 refugees, including 19,415 Congolese living in Gihinga (Mwaro), Gasorwe (Muyinga), and Musasa (Ngozi) refugee camps, and 222 Rwandans living in Giharo (Rutana) refugee camp. UNHCR Burundi provides protection and some assistance to as many as 12,945 urban refugees and asylum seekers, of which approximately 99 % are Congolese (DRC).

Peacekeeping efforts for Chad and CAR

On the 11 January-at a meeting in Belgium-France, Poland and Belgium made pledges to provide the extra resources needed to launch the European Union Force for Chad and the Central African Republic (EUFOR). However the force could not be deployed-by the end of January-as planned, due to violence that beset the Chadian capital N'Djamena. EUFOR is now expected to reach its preliminary operational capability by the end of February.
