DAKAR, May 25 (Thomson Reuters Foundation) - An Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo could spread to the neighbouring Central African Republic, where militia violence has forced thousands of people to flee across the border, the World Health Organization said on Thursday.

Two cases of the virus have been confirmed by the WHO in Congo's remote northeastern Bas-Uele province since early May. Four people have died so far among the 43 suspected and confirmed cases.

In the Democratic Republic of the Congo, nearly 8 million people are in need of humanitarian assistance and protection (Humanitarian Response Plan, OCHA, January 2017) and 6 million are food insecure. Population movements account for more than half of humanitarian needs. By the end of 2016, the country had more than 2.1 million IDPs and nearly 1.5 million refugees. According to UNHCR, there are nearly 75 000 South Sudanese refugees registered in the provinces of Ituri and Haut-Uélé.

Inter-Ministerial delegation headed by the Minister of MINARS visited Dundo area to strengthen the coordinated response from the government and the UN agencies.

UNHCR distributed food and relief items for approximately 2,500 asylum-seekers hosted in Mussungue reception centre.

The Angolan authorities will open a new site in Lovua Municipality. Preparations are underway to establish necessary structures and services for asylum-seekers.

During 2016, more than 920,000 people were forced to flee their homes in the Democratic Republic of the Congo according to a new report from the Internal Displacement Monitoring Centre. No one can deny the immense beauty of the forested highlands in eastern DR Congo. Small villages perched high up on grassy hilltops overlook lush valleys dotted with gargantuan hardwood trees.

But eastern DR Congo is no paradise.

On 11 May 2017 the Democratic Republic of the Congo notified the World Health Organization (WHO) of an outbreak of Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) in Likati health zone, Bas Uele Province, in the northern part of the country. As of 20 May, 37 cases of suspected Ebola and four deaths had been reported. The risk to public health from this outbreak is currently assessed as being high at the national level, moderate at the regional level, and low at the global level.

Going to the epicenter of an Ebola outbreak is not easy – you need to mentally prepare. In fact, when I informed my colleagues in Kinshasa that I was going to the epicenter of the outbreak, I could see the apprehension on their faces. Fortunately, we have a clear office protocol in place, and we make sure that staff who go to an active zone have an individual protective kit, no matter how far or close they are to the outbreak area.
