pits Tutsi rebels against Zairian troops threatened to engulf much of the region.
U.N. Secretary General Boutros Boutros-Ghali earlier called for an emergency mission to Zaire followed by an international conference to prevent the violence from spreading throughout central Africa.

NAIROBI, Oct 27 (Reuter) - A stream of about 200,000 Rwandan refugees fled westwards on Sunday after one of eastern Zaire's biggest camps was reported to have been shelled from Rwanda and several refugees were killed, a senior aid worker said.

"There is a stream of people about 25 km (15 miles) long...I saw pregnant women, handicapped people, little children," U.N.
official Panos Moumtzis said by telephone from the Zairean town of Goma.

BUKAVU, Zaire, Oct 27 (Reuter) - The Zairean government closed the airport at Goma on Sunday, stranding more than 20 foreign aid workers trying to fly out because of worsening security in eastern Zaire, an aid official said.

Michele Quintaglie, speaking from the Ugandan capital Kampala, said the Zairean authorities had closed the airport
without explanation and without saying when it would reopen.

New York -- Fifty thousand refugees have arrived in Bukavu, Zaire, fleeing fighting to the south. ACT, an interchurch aid coalition including Lutheran World Relief, is gearing up to meet minimum basic needs in the area. An airlift of emergency rations is to begin tomorrow. Stocks of medicines, blankets and cooking utensils are being prepared for distribution.
