KINSHASA, Zaire (Reuter) - Zaire's embattled Prime Minister Kengo wa Dondo, a victim of the rebellion in the east and political infighting in the capital, resigned Monday, a spokesman said.

State television said ailing President Mobutu Sese Seko had accepted the resignation but asked Kengo and his government to remain in office until a successor was found.

"The prime minister handed his resignation to the President (Mobutu Sese Seko)," Zola Kinkela, spokesman for Kengo's Union of Independent Democrats (UDI), told Reuters in Kinshasa.
