Government Collaborating with United Nations, but Opposes Proposed Independent Probe of Killings, Stresses Vice-Prime Minister
A collaborative Anabaptist response will soon reach some of the 1.4 million people displaced by armed conflict in the Kasai region of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DR Congo) with food, household items and shelter supplies.
The response, shaped and implemented by Congolese Mennonite and Mennonite Brethren church-based relief committees and coordinated by Mennonite Central Committee (MCC), is supported by global and Canada- and U.S.-based Anabaptist organizations.

UNITED NATIONS, Aug 17 2017 (IPS) - The UN’s refugee agency is relocating more than 33,000 Congolese refugees from overcrowded temporary shelters in northern Angola to a more permanent establishment in Lóvua.
From April this year, Angola witnessed an influx of refugees—who were fleeing violence in neighbouring Democratic Republic of Congo—to its Lunda Norte province. The government rushed to manage the situation by setting up temporary centers in Cacanda and Mussunge.
Luanda - The Social Welfare minister Wednesday in Luanda reiterated his call to the international community, churches and society, for a relief aid to the 30,000 refugees from the Democratic Republic of Congo based in Angola.
Gonçalves Muandumba was speaking to journalists after a ceremony of symbolic delivery of a kit of reproductive health material by the representative of the UN Populations Fund to Angola, Florbela Fernandes.
The handout is part of 3,000 different kits for newly-born babies, children, young people and women.

TURKANA, Kenya, Aug 17 (Thomson Reuters Foundation) - In the simmering heat of the Kalobeyei refugee settlement in northwest Kenya, Augustine Murenzi brushes soil off a maturing watermelon in his small kitchen garden.
"My house is fully furnished from these," said the Rwandan refugee, explaining how he sells his surplus melons for income, before moving on to a patch of kale.

MSF international president Joanne Liu has recently returned from a visit to Kananga city, in Kasai Central province, Democratic Republic of Congo. She shares her impressions of the ongoing crisis there.
During my recent visit to Kasai I went with our teams to a rural part of the region that has been particularly affected by violence. Villages and fields have been burned, and several mass graves have been discovered. A man approached us and said very simply, “The violence here was so terrible that we didn’t hear the birds sing for days.”
Senior chief in Angola’s Lunda Norte province speaks about refugee crisis in his country
“I feel honoured by the government´s decision to host the refugees from the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) in my area” says Francisco Muhangenu (50), a senior chief of Lunda Norte Province, Angola, standing between his fellow chiefs during a traditional ritual for blessing the refugee camp site. “We are the same people despite the border line which has separated us.”
