Dear colleagues,

As of 29 May (16:00, UTC+5:30), severe weather conditions have affected an estimated 557,500 people in 15 districts across Sri Lanka. Over the past three days, 177 people have been killed by floods and landslides with 109 people still missing according to the Disaster Management Centre (DMC). Over 400 houses have been destroyed, 5,200 houses partially damaged and 75,000 people are temporarily displaced in safe locations – 38,300 displaced people are in Rathnapura District

In collaboration with ITT unit of the Regional Office, the IHM unit of the Department of WHO Health Emergen- cies Programme in EMRO is developing a regional electronic platform for EWARN (Early warning Alert and Re- sponse Network) for humanitarian crisis affected settings.

Chinese government announced to donate emergency humanitarian disaster relief goods worth a total amount of RMB 15 million (about 2.2 million US dollars) to Sri Lankan people who were affected by floods and landslides, China Radio International (CRI) said.

The relief goods, which will be sent to Colombo by a Chartered flight soon, include tents, blankets, sheets, rain boots, and life jackets.

  • Tilapia lake virus (TiLV) poses a great threat to the tilapia sector. Tilapias are farmed globally and are the second most important aquaculture species in terms of volumes produced, providing a key source of affordable animal protein, income to fishfarmers and fishers, and domestic and export earnings.

Decisions to allocate resources must strike a balance between meeting the immediate needs of crisis affected communities and supporting efforts to strengthen resilience and response preparedness to future emergencies.

Women and children bearing the brunt of the conflict in Kachin

In January 2017, baby Ying Lawm was born on the side of a road in no-man’s land, not far from the frontlines of war-ravaged Kachin State. The baby’s young mother, Bauk Seng Pan, gave birth while on the run from one of the world’s longest running civil wars. After five years of displacement, Bauk Seng Pan dreams that she and her family will one day be able to return home and resume a normal life.

NAIROBI – Today the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) has welcomed a US$5 million contribution from the Government of China to support 420,000 refugees living in camps in northern Kenya.

After more than a year of ration cuts caused by a shortage of funding, new donor contributions from China and other countries have allowed WFP to resume full food rations to refugees from April to July. In Kenya, refugees cannot work outside the refugee camps and with limited sources of income, they are heavily dependent on WFP for food.

BEIJING, May 13 (Xinhua) -- China's Ministry of Civil Affairs (MCA) has sent relief supplies to quake-hit areas in Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region following a 5.5-magnitude earthquake early Thursday morning.

The quake relief materials comprised blankets. coats, sleeping bags, tents and folding beds, tables and chairs, according to the MCA.

BEIRUT, May 12 (Xinhua) -- China's ambassador to Lebanon Wang Kejian delivered Friday school supplies valuing 1 million U.S. dollars in aid to the Syrian refugee students in Lebanon.

"As part of China's pledge during the last year's UN General Assembly to assist humanitarian cause with 100 million dollars, the supplies will be distributed by the UN Children's Fund (UNICEF) to help the refugee students overcome difficult situation," Wang said while delivering the supplies at Bekaa town of Saadnayel.

BEIJING, May 11 (Xinhua) -- China has activated emergency response procedures following a 5.5-magnitude earthquake in Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region early Thursday morning.

The China Earthquake Administration activated level-III emergency response procedures earlier Thursday. All departments concerned are on high alert, and will continue to monitor for aftershocks and evaluate damage.

TAXKORGAN, Xinjiang, May 11 (Xinhua) -- Eight people have been confirmed dead and 23 others were injured after a 5.5-magnitude earthquake jolted Taxkorgan County in northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region at 5:58 a.m. Thursday.  

So far, the quake has left lives of more than 12,000 people affected. A total of 9,200 people have been relocated to safe places.
