The report showcases many of UNEP’s big results of the last year – from key work in support of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the Paris Agreement to securing investor pledges to decarbonize $600 billion worth of assets under management – and zooms in on projects helping communities in countries like Colombia and Cambodia to adapt to climate change and develop sustainable livelihoods.

A Chilean court ordered the government Thursday to pay $2.7 million to the families of 20 people killed by a devastating tsunami in 2010.

The court ruled the government was at fault in the victims' deaths because it canceled a tsunami alert initially issued after an 8.8-magnitude earthquake rocked central and southern Chile on February 27, 2010.

 As of 27 April, 55 countries and territories report continuing mosquito-borne transmission; for 42 countries this is their first documented Zika virus outbreak (Fig. 1).

 Mosquito-borne transmission (Table 1):

 42 countries are experiencing a first outbreak of Zika virus since 2015, with no previous evidence of circulation, and with ongoing transmission by mosquitos.

 13 countries reported evidence of Zika virus transmission between 2007 and 2014, with ongoing transmission.

Description of the disaster On 16 September 2015, an 8.4 earthquake hit the regions of Atacama and La Araucanía in Chile. The National Emergency Office of the Ministry of the Interior (ONEMI) issued a tsunami alert for the entire coastal area in Chile, evacuating more than 600,000 people. ONEMI reported that approximately 681,484 people were affected and the Coquimbo region was declared a catastrophe area.

Severe storms and flooding across South America's "southern cone" have killed at least 12 people and forced thousands to evacuate, with more bad weather on the way.

Argentina, Chile and Uruguay have all been hit by the deluge, which has inundated towns, taken out bridges, blocked roads and cut off water supplies in recent days.

In Uruguay, the bad weather culminated Friday in a tornado that killed five people in the western town of Dolores.

On 26 March 2016, the National IHR Focal Point of Chile notified PAHO/WHO of a confirmed case of sexual transmission of Zika virus; this is the first case acquired in continental Chilean territory where there is no presence of aedes [vector] mosquitoes.

The case (Person A) developed symptoms consistent with Zika virus disease: rash, retroauricular adenopathies, conjunctivitis, and arthritis on 4 February. Her partner (Person B) developed symptoms consistent with Zika virus disease after travelling to a country where local transmission of Zika virus is known.
