Bangui, le 30 mars 2017 – Les préfectures de la Ouaka, de la Haute Kotto et du Mbomou sont en proie à une nouvelle flambée de violence qui résulte des affrontements entre les groupes armés. Depuis le début du mois de mars 2017, la communauté humanitaire a recensé de nouvelles vagues de déplacements avec leurs corollaires de besoins urgents. Cette nouvelle détérioration intervient à un moment où les conséquences des violences qui ont émaillées la Centrafrique entre septembre 2016 et février 2017 se font encore lourdement ressentir.

La Mission multidimensionnelle intégrée des Nations Unies pour la stabilisation en République centrafricaine (MINUSCA) dénonce les menaces et les attaques des anti-balakas qui ont récemment visé ses casques bleus à Bakouma (préfecture de Mbomou) et à Bria (préfecture de Haute-Kotto), dans l’est du pays. Les attaques ont eu lieu alors que la MINUSCA intervenait dans les deux localités pour protéger les populations.

Un an après que la République centrafricaine a élu son nouveau président dans l’espoir d’un retour à la paix et à la stabilité et d’une réconciliation, Oxfam attire l’attention sur le fait que la violence et l’insécurité ont gagné du terrain depuis octobre dernier.

Bangui, 30 March 2017 – The prefectures of Ouaka, Haute Kotto and Mbomou are prey to a new outbreak of violence resulting from clashes between the armed groups. Since the beginning of March 2017, the humanitarian community has identified new waves of displacement with urgent needs to be met. This new deterioration comes at a time when the consequences of the violence which studded the Central African Republic between September 2016 and February 2017 are still heavily felt. In this short period, more than 100,000 newly displaced people have been registered.

In the Central African Republic, the ICRC has a delegation in Bangui, sub-delegations in Kaga Bandoro, Bambari, Ndélé and Bangui (covering the west of the country), and an office in Birao.

In 2016, we improved access to emergency and routine medical care and upgraded water and sanitation infrastructure. We helped people meet their basic needs, restored family links, visited detainees and promoted international humanitarian law. Many of our activities were carried out in tandem with the Central African Red Cross Society.

  • On 26 March, armed groups attacked civilians in the area of Bria (East of CAR, approx. 600 km from Bangui) and engaged in fighting with MINUSCA, who intervened to protect civilians. At least two INGOs staff have been wounded. The full impact of the attack is still unknown as needs assessments have not yet been carried out due to restriction of movement.

  • A campaign for mass distribution of mosquito nets has been launched. WFP will ensure the distribution of 7 million mosquito nets to 10 million people in 13 regions of Chad in the framework of UNDP’s programme to prevent malaria, the first cause of death in the country. WFP leverages its field presence and logistical expertise to dispatch the nets to 4,000 sites through 900 health centres.

  • WFP is expanding the use of cash-based transfers from 1 to 3 sites in the East region resulting in an additional 15,972 new people for cash assistance in February.

  • WFP continues to face critical funding gaps impacting the level of food and nutrition assistance provided to all targeted groups (refugees, displaced people and vulnerable host communities) in the Far North and eastern regions.

By decision of Minister for Foreign Trade and Development Kai Mykkänen, Finland’s humanitarian aid will amount to EUR 61.4 million, of which approximately EUR 20 million will be channelled to the famine-hit countries in the Horn of Africa and to Nigeria and Yemen.
