Highlights

  • Between January and March, the number of internally displaced people in the Far North increased by 17% to 223,642. This is striking, given that UNICEF continues to face a funding gap of 71% for its humanitarian programs in Cameroon.

  • Fifty-six schools in the Far North have developed safe and protective school plans, which aim at equipping teachers and children with the tools and skills to protect themselves in the event of an attack at school. 26,000 children have benefitted from this initiative.

Ce 06 juin 2017, s’est ouvert au quartier général de la MINUSCA un atelier de sensibilisation des services chargés d’application des lois en République centrafricaine dans le cadre de la lutte contre la criminalité organisée et transnationale.

Du 06 au 08 juin 2017, cet atelier va réunir 30 personnes dont sept femmes, issues de la police et de la gendarmerie centrafricaine, des eaux et forêts et du ministère des Finances.

SUICIDE BLAST KILLS SEVEN, HALTS AID MISSIONS

A suicide bomber on 2 June killed nine people and wounded 30 others in Kolofata area in Cameroon’s Far North region. The attack was the 18th of its kind since January and prompted the suspension of UN missions to the area. Insecurity and persistent Boko Haram attacks are the main hindrance to aid delivery in the region. On 26 May, a suicide bomber struck Kolofata as a mission by UN agencies was about to arrive.

With the lean season beginning, an estimated 5.5 million people across South Sudan were facing severe food insecurity in May, including some 1.46 million on the brink of famine. The month saw the number of people displaced continuing to rise, albeit at a slower rate compared to April. At least 60,000 South Sudanese fled as refugees in May. Clashes in and around Yei in Central Equatoria caused an average of 2,000 refugees to arrive daily into Uganda from 15 to 21 May.

An IAEA project shows that significant reserves of good quality water are available in Africa’s drought-prone Sahel region. Pollution is still limited and has not yet become a serious threat to these vital resources. The findings, compiled in five reports published today, are the result of a four-year Agency effort to help 13 countries use isotopic techniques to assess groundwater origin and quality in five shared aquifers and basins, providing the first broad overview of the region’s groundwater supplies.

Santé : Malgré les sessions de sensibilisation sur la santé de la reproduction, les femmes enceintes négligent toujours les consultations prénatales qui peuvent les aider à réduire les risques de mortalité infantile et maternelle. Ainsi, sur 95 femmes enceintes dénombrées sur le site Lazare, seul 22,33% ont été une fois à l’hôpital pour les consultations prénatales.
